...fair enough, then, saintotto - please feel free to educate us at your soonest convenience. And no, I do not own a Noctilux (but I do know a couple of folks who do).

thank you for that lovely response. i certainly did not mean to offend you. no secret here. that's my point. i just point the lens into the sun and it produces that very unique flair. every single time. i dont have this with other lenses. and i am not attempting to come accross like noctilux snob either. i just point it into the sun and it does the same thing over and over.

...no offence recognised, saintotto. I take the view that merely owning a Noctilux (or indeed, any piece of equipment) does not make one a snob, however hard some may want it to. It is what one produces with such a lens lens that easily defines what sort of a photographer one truly is.

Will attempt to replicate what you just described. Thanks.

Seriously--Otto is right! The Nocti--and any other lens--will flare very predictably if you overwhelm it with light.

In fact, you're going to get veiling flare if you let the direct sun fall on the front element of the lens. Just go shoot without a lens hood when the sun is a low angle and see what happens :) Totally predictable. Heck, for that matter, go shoot a Canon or a Nikon 85 or 70-200 (I don't care which one) wide open agains the light and see what happens to your contrast :) That's veiling flare...looks just like haze over the whole shot. Most later Leica lenses are much better in that department (and the new Nikkors have a "nano crystal" coating that cuts down on veiling flare.

And what happens when you point the sun into the lens intentionally is a different thing. Depending on the angle of the sun, how much is entering the lens, and how much you shield it, and what aperture you select, you will get different effects...

The Nocti, as Otto said (and has show on his blog)--and as I've done as well--is totally predictable... big huge double globes of light opposite the entry point when it's wide open, with this big red shift towards the end of the flare.

But just to show you it can be done even with lenses designed to inhibit flare, here are three 35 Lux ASPH just for illustration... not as pretty as the Noctilux 1.0, but still shares the same characteristcs when you work the "intentional" flare component, and can add visual interest as well. These are all at f2 or 2.8...

Sun is still really high...but only in the very corner of the frame

This is a crop: full sun still high in the frame... note the excessive veiling flare as well, which is killing contrast and creating some weird colour... but there's the signature "globes" and colour you see more "beautifully" (I think) with the Nocti 1.0...

Here I'm really controlling how much sun is entering the picture (with the tree). The Nikkor 85 1.4 I was also shooting with totally washed this shot out... the Lux ASPH, however, does not...
