algrove Posted August 7, 2011 Share #62 Posted August 7, 2011 I use the GF1 with M adapter. Works great for me.
Hank Taylor Posted August 24, 2011 Share #63 Posted August 24, 2011 I'll be going to Germany the end of next month and was thinking on taking along my Digilux 2 as a back up for mu M9/ What lenses would you recommend for the M9 to complement my D-2 ? 3rdtrick Posted August 24, 2011 Share #64 Posted August 24, 2011 This was interesting reading. Seems "Second Body" means different things to different people. If I were shooting for money, I would definitely have a second M9 or M9p so I can send my M9 in for the upgrade... One Black and one Chrome, wouldn't that be cool? Or maybe both black so I can use them on a stereo dual camera bar. Well that is not happening! Anyway, my second body is my Nikon D300. I use it mainly with long lenses so it usually serves a different purpose than the M9 but I can still have fun when I send my M9 in for the upgrade. norm_snyder Posted August 24, 2011 Share #66 Posted August 24, 2011 A good many years ago, I owned two cameras, an M2 w 35mm Summicron and a Nikon F plain prism, with a 50 f1.4 and a 105mm. Interestingly, when I traveled, I seldom saw a need for more than one, never considering that I would need a "back up" in case of failure. Neither one of them ever failed to perform, needed adjustment, etc. My biggest worry was only how much film to carry. I used to try to limit myself to about 5x36 exposures per day. This may have as much been the result of economics as of bulk when traveling. Today, in the case of "second body" [rather than back up] to facilitate not changing lenses, etc., for now, i use an M8u, on which usually the 75mm Summicron is mounted, with the 35mm on the M9. This gets me close to the combination I used back in the mercury battery era, when I kept a 105mm on the Nikon, once I acquired it, and a 35mm on the M2. Suits 90%+ of my needs. If I need to go wider or longer, I use my feet.
losta Posted August 24, 2011 Share #67 Posted August 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I believe I heard that borrowlenses.com rents M9s. Depending on how long one was traveling it might be cheaper to buy used then sell than pay for an extended rental. I have an X100 but would consider the GXR M Mount Module too. I have an M6 but rarely use it and am going to sell it soon. Carrying film with air travel is too much bulk and hassle.
Anasebi Posted August 24, 2011 Share #68 Posted August 24, 2011 This new Sony NEX-7 could be an interesting option -- Sony NEX-7 high-end APS-C mirrorless camera first look: Digital Photography Review Paul PaulRoark.com -- Paul Roark's Photographic Home Indeed, and word of warning to prepare for lens prices to rise over the next few months: The Nex 7 will likely be the answer for many wishing for a first or second RF body. Besides its APS-C sensor, its specifications are absolutely sublime. The newer firmware on the Nex cameras are a massive improvement, combining that with Offset lenses that nearly eliminate ultrawide color cast(as proven on the NexC3, which also has proven itself to posses a very light AA filter), peaking function that I've seen first hand works brilliantly, with a high res high contrast OLED EVF will be as good as body RF glass can get without being on an M9 or 35mm. Seriously though, Sony is knocking with the camera type that finally answers what can replace both SLR anf Ragenfinder. The thing should MF lighting fast considering how well the peaking function works on my old updated Nex with just its screen. Its no going to drive down the prices or desireability of the M cameras, but it is going to drive up the prices of RF glass.... and if you need a second body and can stomach a crop factor; look no further. guidomo Posted August 24, 2011 Share #69 Posted August 24, 2011 +1 on all that's been said about the new NEX 7. Great news for M lens owners who are able to look beyond the Leica universe.
davidbaddley Posted August 25, 2011 Share #70 Posted August 25, 2011 I don't think I'd call it the best, but I sometimes reach for my Epson R-D1. Yeah, the resolution is nothing compared to the M9, but I get to use the same lenses on a camera with a similar feel, and it gives me a warm nostalgia for the days when Leica said it couldn't be done. - David

Paul Verrips Posted May 27, 2012 Share #72 Posted May 27, 2012 Canon G11 & my wife's Nikon 1 J1. Some day maybe a M4 (1968, my year of birth) or M7.
atournas Posted May 27, 2012 Share #73 Posted May 27, 2012 Let me get it. My M9 suddenly stops working, but no sweat, I grab my M6 from the bag, put the lens on, and keep shooting! What film? What ISO? What exposure approach? What photographic mood, digital-ish or film-ish? Only a pro can switch from M9 to M6 that easily; but then the pro would have a second M9 as a backup. winmore Posted May 28, 2012 Share #74 Posted May 28, 2012 My wife has a D-lux 5 that provides a small, convenient, auto back-up. My real alternative though is a Hasselblad 501, 80 Planar with Phase One P25 back. All up cost around $2 800. Provides a lower viewpoint and a discreet street option (looking down on the large screen seems not to attract attention). Trouble is I am coming to enjoy the great files and now use my M9 less. Maybe my M9 is on the way to becoming my back-up! Cheers Ron
andalus Posted May 28, 2012 Share #75 Posted May 28, 2012 I am getting a back up that might become a front up: D800E with the 24-70.
RotarySMP Posted May 28, 2012 Share #76 Posted May 28, 2012 The back-up for my M8 is an M2 (or is that the other way around?)
bocaburger Posted May 28, 2012 Share #77 Posted May 28, 2012 I'd vote the *best* 2nd body to an M9 would be another M9...but that's more than I feel I want to spend, even used. My backup since my M8 days has been a DLux-3. One thing I just can't stand however is LCD viewing, so I have recently decided on the DLux-5 clone, Panny LX-5 w/the clip-on EVF.
