k-hawinkler Posted June 30, 2011 Author Share #21 Posted June 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) NM fire to become largest in state history | abc7.com First Arizona set a new state record with their fire, I believe. Now New Mexico follows in their footsteps. Hopefully our fire doesn't get anywhere near the more than 600,000 acres of the big Arizona fire. K-H. k-hawinkler Posted July 2, 2011 Author Share #27 Posted July 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) K-H, Been holding my breath. Bandelier just got a make over not too long ago, and 2000 is still a harsh memory. Happy you made it unscathed. Spectacular, but always sad to see, fire photos of my beloved NM. Bob Jackson Hi Bob, Thank you. There seem to be quote: "53 large uncontained wildfires burning in the United States, from Alaska to Florida, according to the National Interagency Coordination Center. All told, the fires have burned 2,166 square miles or 1.4 million acres -- nearly the size of Delaware." according to Wildfires blaze in 12 states, forcing evacuations, killing 2 - Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper: : wildfires blaze in 12 states, forcing evacuations, killing 2, . I think we were - by and large - lucky this time. Unfortunately some families and businesses lost their homes/buildings. The fire isn't over yet by any means and is still spreading into new areas. Although Bandelier is closed indefinitely, it appears the newly remodeled Visitor Center has been saved by the determined efforts of the fire fighters. We got our evacuated horses back yesterday afternoon and just had a few minutes ago a one minute rain at my house in White Rock. Hopefully the monsoon season now starts in earnest and puts the fires eventually out for good. Best, K-H. PS: Despite the fires, New Mexico is as pretty as ever and has lost nothing of its charm. In no time at all the burned areas will be covered with new plants and offer breath-taking views. We need to get back to the lower forest densities of centuries past anyway. At the middle elevations, through the drought of the last decade, we already have lost upwards of 60% of the trees. And that happened without fires. k-hawinkler Posted July 3, 2011 Author Share #30 Posted July 3, 2011 Another interesting map InciWeb the Incident Information System: Las Conchas https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ftp/InciWeb/NMSNF/2011-06-27-00:17-las-conchas/picts/pict-20110703-115009-0.jpeg showing isolated, scattered, and intense heat sources and the heat perimiter. Also, the evacuation of Los Alamos was lifted this morning. Having been part of the Cerro Grande Fire evacuation in 2000, I can tell you that's a big relief. K-H. k-hawinkler Posted July 4, 2011 Author Share #31 Posted July 4, 2011 Less than a quarter mile from my house, on a horse trail, is this sign describing activities not permitted on DOE land. Please note, the sign doesn't say: Keep Out or No Trespassing. Indeed, this land is a favorite place for walking a dog, riding a horse, or just hiking. I took this image a couple days ago. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Less than a hundred yards beyond the sign, I also noticed these workers laying out and marking a route. Today, I checked the area again and found a newly bulldozed trail - presumably a fire break. Hopefully we don't need to rely on it. During part of the day smoke drifted again into our neighborhood. But nothing dramatic. Later in the afternoon, winds shifted in a favorable direction and permitted this view. With so much smoke still in the air around the Jemez mountains, evening colors remain unusual. Here two birds can be seen in the light of the setting Sun. Best, K-H.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! k-hawinkler Posted July 5, 2011 Author Share #34 Posted July 5, 2011 Virgil, Paul, Thank you. This fire certainly put on a 4th of July display. The road passing by Bandelier is open again for the general public, but of course, one cannot enter Bandelier itself. This road along the southern boundary of the Laboratory offers excellent vantage points to observe the mountains to the northwest. Welcome, dear visitor! k-hawinkler Posted July 6, 2011 Author Share #35 Posted July 6, 2011 This is a late afternoon image of the fire in the hills above Los Alamos. Earlier in the afternoon the fire was really intense. But the fire break created by the Cerro Grande fire in 2000 helps to keep the flames away from the city this time. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Here is a view of Los Alamos airport. 736 is coming in for a landing. 736 parks next to 746. There is quite a bit of support activity. Here we see an HQ helicopter with a water bucket on a long rope. HQ is slowly lowering bucket and rope to the ground before landing. 746 is taking off again. It's an Erickson Air-Crane. Turning towards the mountains 736 is being serviced by 3 technicians. As the fire moves, so do the support crews from airport to a closer airport. K-H.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! k-hawinkler Posted July 7, 2011 Author Share #36 Posted July 7, 2011 Tonight the fire kept on going north of Los Alamos. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Zooming in on the bottom right of the previous image we can make out a water tower, well in front of the flames. Zooming in further, there seems to be some kind of structure either on top or behind the water tower. Whenever the fire reaches large new fuel sources, that is trees, it flares up tremendously and consumes the fuel. Here is a detail from the fire further up to the left. In between the fire and my vantage point is this building. One can see just a little the glow from the fire above the bulding. K-H.
