farnz Posted June 25, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) An interesting question for you learned gentlemen and gentlewomen of the forum. I have recently acquired an as new, first version, 9-element 2.8/28 Elmarit-M (11801) in its original box and all but one of the pictures I can find of the same lens show the focus distance scales in meters (white) and feet (yellow). My lens has the feet scale in red lettering. What does the red lettering signify and why would it be different please? Pete.

luigi bertolotti Posted June 26, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 26, 2011 Mine has too the red scale (2.063.241 - Wetzlar), while in the Wiki a 2.19x.xxx is displayed, Wetzlar too but scale in yellow. Apparently there were 2 batches only of this lens... with a mix Canada/Wetzlar Red/Yellow... I haven't idea if there is a consistent rule like "all 1st batch are red-scale" ...as is stated in our Wiki page: which s/n is yours ?
farnz Posted June 26, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted June 26, 2011 Luigi, I think mine's a very early one. The s/n is 2062xxx. Pete.

luigi bertolotti Posted June 27, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 27, 2011 Pete... I have remembered to have made a sort of little resarch about the Elmarit 28 1st, time ago... and I found it (a simple Excel sheet with s/n, factory W/C, color R/Y, source)... it was based on the published items for sale (dealers, auctions... a significant number passed through Leicashop/Westlicht... other sellers like Schouten too offered them not once only). Of the 30 or so items I "collected" it appeared that : - ALL the 2.06x.xxx were with RED scale, be Wetzlar or Canada - The 2.06x.xxx are about evenly distributed between ELC and ELW - The 2.19.x.xxx were mixed Yellow / Red scale... almost all from Canada except one 2.198.003 from Wetzlar (Yellow - the highest s/n I found) - There was not relation numbering / color... examples (Canada) : 2.196.963 - Yellow 2.196.981 - Red 2.197.221 - Red 2.197.403 - Yellow Of course... raw data, statistically not significative (1% ca. of actual production) and no way to verify repaints or so... farnz Posted June 27, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted June 27, 2011 Thank you, Gentlemen, for providing your expert knowledge. Mine is an ELC. For me, this thread reinforces what a superb asset this forum and the collective knowledge of its members is. (I just think this needs acknowledging from time to time.) Pete.
