Panasonic LC1 Sensor Failure

I came across a truly mint LC1 with box/everything at a price that was a veritable steal. I took a chance as it functioned perfectly as I inspected it and after brief testing last night. That said, I learned from other postings on this site that the serial # of this camera falls within the dreaded range when the bad sensors were installed. Damn! Has anyone recently (last year] had Panasonic replace their LC1 sensor and do they do so according to their statement free of charge? Furthermore, will they replace it even though I am not the original purchaser of the camera? I thank everyone in advance for their replies and experience here.

I can't be that worried about a sensor failure as I don't have a clue what percentage of the Sony sensors in the Digilux 2s and LC1s failed but was looking for the experience of others who HAVE dealt with the problem with Panasonic. I have a D2 with a replaced sensor and Leica knows exactly which cameras have a potential problem and will replace the sensors no questions asked.

My LC-1, bought new, had the sensor die. I left it in a drawer for a couple of years, then had it fixed about 18 months ago by Panasonic UK. I had to argue with them - they wanted proof of purchase - but I pointed out that I was not in the habit of keeping receipts for 5 years so they were being unreasonable. I cited the same notification you have attached. It took some persistence, but they did do it in the end.

Regards,

Bill

Thanks Bill this helps a lot. Andy, there were quite a number of posts on the LC1 sensors on this forum but really nothing in the last few years hence my post. I do find more intelligent answers/solutions to problems on this forum than I have found on any Panasonic site.

From what I read, not all sensors failed, so if your camera is still fine, it probably will be fine. Of course it is also possible that the sensor was already replaced.

I think you were lucky Bill, I recall a thread some time ago where the poster said that Panasonic refused the free sensor replacement as the offer had discontinued. But worth trying as you say! When was the last case of a sensor failure I wonder?

Panasonic UK had paid for my LC1 sensor replacement, back in 2009. I had to send them an email with all online sources on Sony sensor recall including the announcement you included, also a copy of the original purchase receipt.

That 5 MP Sony sensor dates back to 2001; the LC1 in 2004 was the last camera ever to use it. I’m pretty sure that the vast majority of cameras with this sensor have either been retired by now, got their sensor replaced, or both.

My LC1 died circa 2008/9 with the dreaded sensor failure and my experiences were similar to Bill's but eventually Panasonic caved in and sent me labels etc to send it to their specialist contractor located near Gatwick.

The repair was then completed quite quickly with the camera returned with a note advising that the sensor had been replaced, auto focus checked and adjusted, a complete camera clean, all free of charge.:)

As Bill advised it was all worth the initial hassle, try mentioning LUF as a source of your information concerning these well known sensor failures!
