I could get a Noctilux 50/0.95 today - don't know...

What are your photographic needs to justify the investment?

Good question. That's what I'm asking myself. I think it would be nice to have the possibility of shooting at .95, however, does it really make a difference to justify the price (compared to the Summilux)?

I HAVE owned a Noctilux (f/1 version) in the past. Speaking as a user, I would say that if you have a real 'need' for such a fast lens then you would not need to ask the question;). It really is a specialist lens with very specific uses and if those fit your photography you will know what they are - if you are unsure about it then you don't honestly 'need' one, however such a lens has more allure than straightforward 'needs'. All that said, personally I would be very reluctant to lose my fabulous 50 asph, even to fund a Noctilux.

Get it! Life is short.

No one has gone to their grave wishing they had bought slower lenses ... LOL!

BTW, the 0.95 Noctilux is nothing like the f/1 version and is the equal to the 50 LUX ASPH except it is faster ... nor can its effect be duplicated with blur tools in post.

Biggest issue is finding one.

I'd get the Noctilux and give it a try. Reselling it at no loss should not be a challenge, in case you two don't get along.

Don't get it, it's a crappy lens anyway. Just give me the dealer info so I can get it myself :p

On a more serious note, I agree with Ecaton, get it and resell it if you don't like it. If you are not stretching yourself financially, I don't see what's the point of not buying it. Even if you don't like it, you could sell it used for the same price you paid or maybe a profit. There are many impatient buyers out there. As for myself, I'm the patient type and have been on the wait-list of a UK dealer for 4 months now. I'm hoping my luck would change on the 6th month :)

Might be a good idea, however, I'm not sure if I could sell it for the same price and I don't want to make a loss.

May I suggest an alternative:

If it is the latest version keep the 50/f1.4 Summilux and buy a second hand f1.0 Noctilux if you really want the speed.

There is no discernable difference in light-gathering ability between the f1.0 and the f0.95 (although I stand to be corrected).

You get:

1. The speed and the gorgeous way the Noctilux f1.0 draws and paints it's pastel images.

2. Keep the modern razor sharpness, detail and reduced weight/size of the Summilux which is really only one stop slower and from what I understand draws similarly to the Noctilux 0.95 (although again I stand to be corrected)

3. and a whole lot of cash left in your pocket for a nice holiday somewhere you can take more photos!

I have both lenses (albeit the Noctilux on indefinite loan) and very much like the combination.

Mark

I think that there would be no doubt about needing it if you part with $11k to buy one. You'll be tucking it into bed every morning with a bedtime story (after being out all night).

(especially if there is a spouse in the equation - it becomes as necessary as a life support) Consumer behaviour - forever amusing. I'm had at the Leica Logo! :):) Want IS Need when it's Leica. I had the Noctliux f1.0 - sold it for a pittence, now have Summilux 50mm but there is this constant subconsious nagging that will not cease until I have another Noctilux in my hand. Buying one is the easy part (and I have to save for it) - justifying it to myself is like building a case. Wish I could take something to get rid of that nagging pang!

Maybe I'm a barbarian but I don't see the point of a Noct 0.95 if you have a Summilux 50 ASPH. However I can understand a Noct 1.0 as it's just totally different from the 50 ASPH and that's the pair that I use. MarkP articulates it nicely above, however if you just want one stop above the Summilux use faster film or raise your ISO.

I had this lens with my M 6 and kept it for a year or so for very specific use . When i stopped that use, I sold it. It was the very first lens I sold. The rest of the Leica equipment was sold a lot of years later. All in all it was a great lens for specif opportunities but not for the usual photographs. Too bulky and from 2.0 onwards not as good as the Summicron 50 /2.0 at this time (25 years ago app.) .

I think it would be nice to have the possibility of shooting at .95, however, does it really make a difference to justify the price (compared to the Summilux)?

Last year, I was able to shoot a Noctilux-M 50 mm 1:0.95 Asph, alongside a Summilux-M 50 mm Asph, for an afternoon, a night, and a morning—and my conclusion was: No, it's not worth the price. Not for me.

The difference between f/1 or f/0.95 (which are virtually the same) and f/1.4 is the same as the difference between f/1.4 and f/2. It's visible in direct comparison but still small. I think it would make sense to own—and to carry!—two 50 mm lenses ... when one is, say, an Elmar-M or Summarit-M and the other is a Noctilux or Summilux. It definitely does not make sense to carry both a Noctilux and a Summilux. So it's either Noctilux-M 50 mm Asph or Summilux-M 50 mm Asph but not both. And I am not talking about money; I am talking about actually carrying and using the lenses. I like the rendition of the Summilux-M Asph too much to replace it with something else ... even if that was the Noctilux-M Asph. The latter, at wide apertures, renders with a slightly coarser brush. That is not necessarily a bad thing but a question of personal preference. I happen to prefer the Summilux's rendition. And one f-stop more, while sure nice to have, is not going to change the world, neither in terms of shutter speeds nor in terms of selective focus.

That said, I still wouldn't mind owning a Noctilux-M Asph ... :rolleyes::cool:

Wonderful photos!

I bought the Noctilux 50 today. Will decide soon which of the two lenses (Summilux or Noctilux) I am going to keep.

Thank you everybody for your advice.

Please post pictures :) of the two!

Really interested to view some of your work and the conclusions made from it!

Thx in advance
