gab3x Posted June 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Am considering purchasing tomorrow two lenses for my M* Summilux 35mm ('82) + Elmarit 21mm ('88), both obviously non asph. Prices are 999GBP for the lux and 1199GBP for the Elmarit. Dealer is reputable but it will have to be mail order so will not have the chance of trying them out beforehand. Couple of questions: - I want the lux for 1.4 as well as smaller apertures. what is your experience shooting this version of the lens on M8? - If anyone has examples of photos taken with either of these non-asph models can you please post them/send me the link? Any other thoughts, opinions etc. are much appreciated. Thx
Advertisement Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Hi gab3x, Take a look here Advice on Summilux 35mm ('82) + Elmarit 21mm ('88). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
badmuts32 Posted June 12, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2011 Hello, I use the M8 and I have owned the Summilux 35 mm for a week. It wasn't my cup of tea. At 1.4 the lux the coma was very bad. I use my lenses always wide open and that isn't possible with the lux. Check for examples LEICA SUMMILUX 35mm f/1.4 (1961-1995) I now own a Summilux 35 mm asph (the 1994 - 2010) edition. It is much better if you use the widest aperture. I wish you all the best with your decision making. Kind regards.
stunsworth Posted June 12, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 12, 2011 At f1.4 the old Summilux is rather poor. Not very sharp and lots of aberrations. Also note that some examples of this lens do not focus to infinity. There's a minor mod to the lens that solves this problem.
geoffreyg Posted June 15, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 15, 2011 The 'luxes suffer from some focus shift, and this has tended to vary by example. Non-returnable lenses are probably to be avoided. So too, I prefer the 'cron (f2) with a bit more DOF - as the skinny DOF in the 1.4 is just a bit rough on the M8. As to the 21mm, many people like that lens. I have the CV version, and would prefer the Leica one. That's probably a decent buy.
steamboat Posted June 15, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 15, 2011 I own both lenses - altho my 35mm f1.4 Summilux is a bit older than yours. I find the lux to be a good lens. I used mine for about 30 years. F1.4 isn't the best. I use to compare it to shooting out a train window. Sometimes it was okay other times no so much. I usually shot at f2.0 and above. That said, my major complaint is that it only focuses down to 1-meter (versus .7-meter for most Leica lenses). OTH, I put up with it for 30 years. It's a tiny lens and very easy to carry with you at all times. An M with a classic 35mm Lux will ride easily on your shoulder under a jacket. I bought the ASPH version first in chrome and later in black. It's a quantum leap. Very nice lens. Considerably heavier, however. The 21mm f2.8 Elmarit? I've never had a major complaint. The only very minor complaint I have is the filter size is E60 (mm) so the front profile of the lens is big (shares filter size with all but original f1.0 Noctilux). You're looking at two very decent lenses. They're not the most current but work well. Good luck with your purchase.
Swanny Swanny Posted June 27, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 27, 2011 A really useful thread as i have in the last 2 weeks purchased a classic 35 lux and today a 21 elmarit thanks to all here
luigi bertolotti Posted June 27, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like my old Summilux 35, but let's say... if one wants to use it at f 1,4 is much better to be in very safe and "easy" light conditions and not pursuing top sharpness : but IS usable on M8. Personally, my one has been almost unused from the day I got a Summicron 35 asph... one stop less but a huge step up at f2.

roguewave Posted June 30, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 30, 2011 The Zeiss Biogon ZM 21, which I purchased from one of our esteemed Forum members is a terrific lens. Very sharp, excellent color and a great performer. I love this lens. It has amazing character in darkness & light. I highly recommend it. It is half the cost of the Leica 21. gab3x Posted July 1, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted July 1, 2011 I actually chickened out and bought the Zeiss Biogon 35m f2 (until a lux ASPH drops into my hands). I love the Zeiss. It is amazing so @roguewave I do believe that the 21mm is really cool too. Off to Barcelona in few weeks time. I am hoping to find something there. Leica or Zeiss.. whatever, though it would be good to have at least one Leica lens...
