Leicas with inter-changable electronics

Here is a paradox: part of Leica cameras (analogue) beauty is their longevity, the digital Leicas however are beautifully built but their electronics will ultimately let them down.

Wouldn´t it be great if Leica made D-cameras which could have their sensors exchanged with later version and developments in the future? That would be something very new on the market and at the same time strengthen Leicas profile and promise.

Imagine a 20 year old black paint M8.2 body with the latest upgrade.

Another idea that comes up every other month or so … Sounds good at first but isn’t really practical; it won’t happen.

Maybe not for Leica, but Ricoh seems to be looking this direction with their GXR. I have one with the 28mm and 50mm modules, and I am looking forward to the M-lens module due out this fall. Unfortunately it will have an APS-C sensor, but we can always hope for better things in the future...

Yes why not keeping the top of the camera (with VF, RF, shutter button, speeds wheel and top display if any) and sliding or otherwise attaching onto it different bottoms with lens mount and electronic innards? We could slide different tops with .85, .72 and .58x VFs as well. Any links between the top and the bottom should be electrical i guess so a micro motor should replace or complement the focus cam presumably. Would it be that difficult to make?
