Discussing the obvious

Leica offers three camera lines, S, M, X developed and not jut branded by Leica. Users are asking for an entry level M camera whatever that really means - it will be difficult to cut features for reduced cost. At the same time some people are asking for a X series camera with interchangeable lenses. Last but not least there are some people sitting on R glass thinking that Canon makes the best Leica mount SLRs.

The sensor in the X1 is really high quality and marketed by other companies in serious interchageable lens cameras and it is a CMOS sensor with live view capabilities. It should be combined not just in a "new" interchangeable lens camera, but allow mounting M lenses. This would be a high quality entry level M-like cameras with sensor dimensions marketed by other companies as a class of its own. The CMOS sensor would also allow mounting a substantial amount of other glass on this camera, including R glass. Such an X camera would make the X people happier, provide an entry level M camera, make R users happy, provide an answer to 4/3 and M4/3 challenges. The whole package would probably be less expensive than cutting features of a coupled range finder model to reduce cost.

Sure enough, one may ask for additional changes in the camera line, but all current cameras are up to date and need to generate sales before they will be replaced. A new X could become a winner.

Is there an obvious way to merge all these threads on "improvements" so that I can avoid reading them? Maybe dr. Jaap dr.med.dent. (mr. moderator) has a bright idea.

Alternatively I might choose to read "The Improvement and I demand a New Visoflex thread" as my daily purgatory:o

Confinement of this plague seems useful.

I suggest starting a "What Leica Should Do" ueber-thread (or shall I call it threat) under which Moderators merge all such discussions. This would allow to easily spot and avoid them;)

We could also confine "best bag", "which lense to take to - location X", "my S2 shutter has just failed", "my recent focus test" and similar topics to this ueber-thread.

Edit: and anything containing crop, DoF, M8 and FF in a single posting.

So far we have combined 12 threads of nonsense with 11 posts repeating the unstated at the same level of ignorance as weeks ago, days ago and hours ago. A little bit of imagination would help guys. But keep this thread alive by posting again and again and again ...

Many people already assume that the Panasonic mft cameras are the Leica entry-level series. Its also a safe bet for a wary world traveler, they look like almost any other "consumer" level camera.

I have actually expected for a quite some time a re-branded Panasonic GH1 or GH2 with a Leica R mount, it would be just as easy (and probably profitable) to put an M mount on a Panasonic GF series.

What’s the point? You can buy an MFT body from Panasonic or Olympus plus an adapter for either M or R lenses – today. Leica has said (repeatedly) that they have no intention to enter the Micro FourThirds market which probably means that they won’t.

It can be argued that MFT is a mostly a lens mount/communication standard. Would a GH2 with an R mount be a MFT camera? There is also almost certainly another Panasonic sensor in the pipeline that outperforms the DMR unit (and some would argue that the current GH2 sensor already does).

The real downside of digital technology is the obsolescence cycle, its very apparent in the non-Leica imaging world (especially video) that cameras are becoming the link in the chain that needs regular updating. If Leica (or anyone else) really wanted to help photographers they would design something that separated the lens-mount/human interface from the sensor/processor so that sensor upgrades wouldn't always involve a new body.

I for one would be completely interested in a mirrorless Leica R solution, in the interim many of us see no choice but to keep using our R lenses on Nikon, Canon, Panasonic or Sony bodies.
