MP 0.58 viewfinder

Is the 0.58 viewfinder intrinsically more delicate than a standard 0.72? I can't see why.

My brand new, a-la-carte MP with it's 0.58 had to go back to Solms two days after I bought it because the rangefinder was misaligned. It came back having had €320 of work done.

Now, only a few weeks later, the rangefinder is off again. This has had only light use and is properly looked after. It will be going back to Solms again, when I get back to the UK.

Neither my M2, nor my M7, treated just as well, have ever had their rangefinders adjusted.

I think I have a Friday camera.

Shame.

I had to have one of my MP rangefinders (0.72) adjusted when I dropped it rather violently. Otherwise, they've been pretty tough.

Sorry to hear you've had trouble with yours.

I'd 'stress' the fact that this camera is going back to Solms for the same reason that has happened in a matter of a few weeks apart and that this shouldn't be!!!

Wouldn't touch it myself.

Agreed. I've owned more M cameras than I should have and haven't had a problem with vertical adjustment over many years of use. I posted the ebay link more as a tongue-in-cheek reference.

Hi Andy

It is probably an 'infant death' problem, I'd not be concerned.

You need to set the rfdr up at (at least) three points even if you are careless like me.

Dont see why they told you it was x euro...

I'll stroke it on the next outing with permission. Farnz had a different problem with his.

Hope it does not repeat.

The basic design for all the RFs are the same, if they weren't the lenses would need calibration for .58, .62, .72, .85 or .91 magnification depending on the camera. The only difference should be in the magnification of the VF optics.

My first M, an M4-P, came with vertical RF misalignment from the factory when new. The PJ I bought the camera from hadn't bothered to have it fixed, but it annoyed me too much that I had a local tech fix it for me - took him less than two minutes. It was fine after that. Never had an RF go misaligned on me as a result of normal use. It shouldn't, ever.

I am sorry to hear that your MP has given you trouble. I bought a new M7 a few months ago, straight out of the box I inserted the batteries, but the on/off switch was faulty. When I finally got power on after several attempts, I fitted a lens and straight away realised that the focus was out of line. I sent it back to the dealer and ordered another one. The next one that I received, switched on/off okay and the focussing was fine but when the film speed was set to DX no good, it works fine when I set the speed by hand which is how I always do it. I should have sent it back but really could not face another period waiting for a repair/replacement as it takes very good pictures.

I wonder if because Leica are making cameras and lenses in batches when they switch from one product to another they are a bit rusty at the first few assemblies and we are the unfortunate ones who get these, as for quality control what on earth happens, do they actually check each item or is it done randomly.

Regards

Rupert

Hi

Two days is probably a dealer problem rather than Solms. I'd expect Andy expressed his dissappointment, to his dealer. The dealer is supposed to address this with Solms. I know my dealer frequents this fora...

The M viewfinders have been changed over the years

Leica M5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

as Wiki seems to think, and Contax II from '36 (& later Kiev) also use glue but they dont need adjusting often, even if you drop, pigs to rebuild.

I took it back to the dealer who had it collected by Leica and it was returned to me within 10 days, including the May Bank Holiday. The €320 included adjusting the shutter times...

It will go back, via the dealer, on my return.

Very disappointing.

No. I didn't see the need...

I do have the D700, though. That's never let me down

The MP is usable, but every time you look through the viewfinder it pisses you off. And the DR Summicron isn't playing nicely with it either. Have taken a total of one roll of film, since Friday...

Hi Andy

Sorry no fun even with friendly dealer.

I normally carry three bodies not because they fail, more frequently I have a film tear off a reel or cassette jam in camera, or tear a sprocket hole etc and can use the other two until I find a darkroom.
