garykaifong Posted June 6, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Out of curiosity, today I hand-held a Leica M 50/1.4 ASPH (same thing happened for my 35/1.4 ASPH & 21/2.8 ASPH) and took out my iPhone 4 and turned on the flashlight, pointing the spotlight from the rear side of the lens towards/through the front, and I was astonished - I saw many particles in the lens. When I said many, I meant thousands. And the interesting bit is that when I pointed the spotlight from the front, I don't see any. Everything shows very clean. But when I pointed the spotlight through the lens, it becomes horrible. Advices needed. I will post 4 photos of my 50/1.4 here. All photos are photos of my 50/1.4 taken by my GRD III using macro mode. 1st 2 pictures was taken with the spotlight pointing in the same direction as my GRD III, i.e. to the front glass. From the photos, you should be able to tell that the lens are very clean, with no dust at all. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/T7mdVJ_y6gUlxPNqRFOL1bu0ZUp0zRlUMQuC-exhsxU?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/KQxeqEjpJBXcKK9KvN8erbu0ZUp0zRlUMQuC-exhsxU?feat=directlink The next 2 photos were taken with the spotlight pointing from the rear glass of the lens towards/through the front glass. And there it became horrible. Looks like it's full of dust. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6n3pDHyrOVAxsnX0J3bcO7u0ZUp0zRlUMQuC-exhsxU?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/K0UMs9qlpzqssKg1TqmFE7u0ZUp0zRlUMQuC-exhsxU?feat=directlink So what exactly are these "particles"? Dust inside the lens, or light reflection? Thanks and regards, Gary

erl Posted June 8, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 8, 2011 I seem to recall reading somewhere, 'never to shine a light through a lens in the direction of your eye'. All lenses will display incredible dust in this direction. Shine in the same as your viewing direction through the lens. This will show any scratches, cleaning mars etc., mostly without the dust. I am sure more expert opinion will post soon, but that has been my experience. Your lenses will work fine.
farnz Posted June 8, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 8, 2011 Gary, Every lens will contain some dust. You've used a large strong light that has shown the dust at its worst. When you last went to watch a movie in a cinema or theatre did you happen to look up at the projector beam and see all the dust in the air? Did you continue to breathe the air? If the dust isn't affecting your pictures then my advice is not to worry about it. Pete.
leicanut2 Posted June 10, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 10, 2011 Make sure the end of the flash light is clean you might be looking at dust on the flash light. Bad idea to use a light it can drive you crazy. Dust just happens even with a filter the lenses are not sealed and the cra-p gets in there no matter how careful you are. earleygallery Posted June 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 10, 2011 It's only really a problem if you can see excessive dust under normal conditions. The flashlight method is good for spotting problems in a lens that you might otherwise miss, but you need to ignore the dust!
