Austinite Posted June 6, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just purchased a new Leica brand -3 diopter for my M2. When I hold it up to my eye it seems fine. When screwed into the exsisting eyepiece the view is not any sharper than without it.I Don't get it and am wondering if anyone has suggestions. I'm rather bummed as it's not cheap to purchase. Thanks....Mike
Advertisement Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Hi Austinite, Take a look here My new -3 diopter doesn't work well.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted June 6, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 6, 2011 How did you figure out which one you needed? It is not the same as your spectacles prescription.
budrichard Posted June 6, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 6, 2011 The Leica M finder has a built in -0.5 diopter, so installing a -3 will make the finder a -3.5 diopter. What does your script call for your viewing eye?-Dick
jaapv Posted June 6, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 6, 2011 The framelines and RF patch are at a virtual distance of 2 meter, so you must be able to accomodate from 2 m to infinity with this strength. If you cannot the compromise is to see the RF patch sharp and accept some fuzziness of the undelying image at infinity.

You frame the issue nicely :-). --Gib
sm23221 Posted June 6, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 6, 2011 May I ask what your age is? I suspect you might have a cataract in that eye. The 0.5D of accommodation that is required is of little significance for most. Also, what is your current spectacle prescription?
Austinite Posted June 7, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted June 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well I'm older at 56 but have not been told I have any abnormal eye problems other than my near lifelong nearsightedness. I usually need somewhere between a -2 and -3 and those corrections work well with all my other cameras. I see fine out of my eyeglasses through the M2 viewfinder but the big 35mm framelines make it hard to see the edges. The new diopter held to my eye looks ok but as I mentioned above things don't look good when screwed into the existing eyepiece. Maybe I should have gone for a -2 instead. I apprecieate the replies folks.
scsambrook Posted June 7, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 7, 2011 Mike, rather than struggling to guess what you need, why not take the camera along to your optician and seek his advice or guidance? Mine was not only able to help but also interested in the problem.
jaapv Posted June 7, 2011 Share #9 Posted June 7, 2011 As mentioned in the M9 FAQ the best way to go about this is indeed to go to the optician and use his tryout lenses as makeshift diopters before ordering. If you kept the box I'm sure Leica will exchange the diopter for the correct value.

Austinite Posted June 7, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted June 7, 2011 " It's not adding up for me. Sorry" Me neither which is why i asked for help. I'm thinking maybe the -3 on top of the eyepiece -.5 is a bit much in the other direction. I do have an optician appointment coming up soon and will see if they can help me out. Thank you.
