LFI magazine

.....I emailed them weeks ago about a story suggestion and to this day haven't heard back.

From my experience, their admin is incompetent.

After I declined to renew my subscription, they continued to send copies of LFI to my address (none of which served to change my opinion of this publication). Despite being told that I did not appreciate their junk-mail, this situation continued for over a year. Things came to a head when I received an invoice for these unwanted magazines.

They were told where they might like to shove their invoice. In their defence, they eventually did apologise for their 'administrative error'.

All photo magazines are plagued by photojournalism which is probably not the main interest of members of this forum and LFI does not escape from it!

But some technical articles are well done and interesting.

Photojournalism reminds us of one of the most significant virtues off the camera. Gotta have it.

I'd also question why they focus on extreme environments, war & famine etc, for their articles. The LFI gallery is excellent and should guide them as to the subjects Leica users are interested in. War, politics and especially celebrity have limited appeal to me and I'd rather see work and text that I can associate with.

There are owners who would love to know more about the cameras, both old and new; the differences in the drawing of each lens; image processing, whether film, hybrid or digital; camera handling techniques; project work; presentation; cleaning tips ... etc. My 2p.

edit: Noel you reminded me - tips on how to best address the inbuilt Leica moire creator. Ha.

Hi Gary

That would be useful, you could try to start another mag, cause LFI is about sexy camera sales, not how to adjust a rfdr during a shoot or PS a file...

That would be a nice addition.

Good to hear that at least I wasn't an isolated incident but that it's company policy!!

When I was given a subscription as a birthday present, I found the war, famine, pestilence, forces of doom articles etc. a pleasant change from the usual magazine fare of dreamy landscapes, third world portraits and endless Photoshop tutorials. But you're right in what you say, there doesn't seem an awful lot about cameras does there? Especially a brand with such a rich history.

Several members echo my desire for more first-person articles on the practice in various fields of Leica photography.

Earlier I referred to the recent article about high-rise photography in Hong Kong. Carla Susanne Erdmann, a fairly regular contributor, asks fairly banal questions which tell us little about the practical aspects of the project. I am sure that many readers would have welcomed insight into how the photographer gained access to his vantage points; which lenses did he use for such penetrating photography and why he chose not to use a wide-angle lens to show context and relative distances. I realise that busy professionals have little time to pen their own words. I wish the editor would brief his non-specialist journalists to elicit the kind of technique information many readers would find useful.

Occasionally I delve into some of my old copies of Leica Fotografie from the 1960s-1980s and find that the writers seemed to have more insight into what was interesting for readers. My carefully worded requests to the editor go unanswered, an experience regrettably shared by several other members contributing to this thread. I just wish the editorial staff at LFI would make time to read some of the constructive discussions which take place in this well-informed forum.

In comparison to many other photo magazines, LFI is by far the best in quality of paper and photography.

The portfolios are unique. You ask which lens was used to photograph the houses in Hongkong. In the German edition of LFI, it is explained at the end of the article:

M8 + Apo-Telyt-M 1:3,4/135 mm.

All the best

Guy

I like it for the images and stories of photographers both amatuers and pros. I don't like it for being so uncritical for Leica... Kinda like overgaard.dk but some informative info once in a while too. I was featured a few month ago in LFI magazine, that was quite fun.

I'm with the group the is luke warm. About one in three or four copies I actually spend a significant amount of time with it. Otherwise, I find myself skimming it, and occasionally picking it up to glance over the pictures. And it can be on the depressing side- I have the evening news for that (guess negative stories sell better).

OTOH, compared to the other mainstream photo magazines, LFI is absolutely inspired. For the last several years I have found National Geographic absolutely fascinating, and often inspiring to my photography- if I could only rise to such levels! I find myself considering do i need to take a DSLR- could I pull that off with my Leicas :D:D:D

Interesting Terry. Whereas Nat Geo inspired me years ago, I rarely see images I can connect with or that inspire me as of late. I find LFI to be a better publication for Portfolios or field work especially when the Barnack awards are featured.

Good point, but I feel it varies month to month with both publications. Maybe I have changed, but I do agree NG is not of the same caliber every month, and I feel the same about LFI.

One thought I have about NG is that I use to feel if I could get there I could get similar images. Now I find myself wondering how much money do I need to get there.

Guess times change.
