Whatever happened to the likes of Salgado being the "face" (or hands actually if you recall the ads) of Leica?

This is a good question. I have great respect for Seal as a musician -- have seen him perform and he is awesome. He may be a very fine photographer too, but I haven't seen his work. Look at the lists of Canon Explorers of Light or Canon Ambassadors or Nikon Ambassadors and you find photographers who are known principally for their great photography. Their endorsement is a powerful sales incentive. I remember seeing Salgado's work in a Leica brochure in the 1980's. His work is so powerful that you look at it and say, "I want the camera he uses!" (even if the camera won't make you Salgado). The last I read, Salgado was shooting Pentax and then Canon, but there must be other great photographers who are shooting the M9. I know someone is going to write that the M9 is selling like hotcakes, so they must be doing something right. Even so, why not associate the brand with great photographers (and I mean living ones, not just those of the past)? Maybe the new association with Magnum is a step in that direction ... we'll see.

Hi

Illogical if you buy a camera promoted by a musician you are not at risk of turning into a musician, think it is merely that very few PJ today use a Leica for bread and butter shots.

Perhaps they should ask a dentist to recommend a Leica. Then the other dentists could be more relaxed about buying one.

Are there any dentist on the fora?

I find it amusing that the camera the global ambassador is flaunting in public owes it origin to the fact that a significant number of Leica users did indeed (to use his words) “have issues with what Leica do” and made it clear to the company that they wanted a camera that differed from what the company was offering.

The message seems to have been heard at Solms, and contrary to the original official policy that “this [silver chrome finish] is not planned”, a silver chrome camera is about to be launched.

What he calls the “uninformed demands of the masses” do have an effect on the “brilliant minds” of Solms after all, it seems.

Best regards,

Doug

I'm not surprised, he tends to lose his cool and lash out from time to time. He once, in his confusion, flamed me extensively on RFF for being a Leica basher....:o

What did you say???? :D

Very good points and I completely agree; I don't know Seal's photography, but we should if he's a Leica Ambassador.

I would guess that more dentists that have Leicas than photojournalists, but there are a few of us who use them!

Alas no Salgados that I can think of; he is truly a genius.

Even if there were personal attacks, an "ambassador" (spokesperson) has to be able to differentiate between him/her as a private person on the one hand and the role as representative of a company on the other hand. But read the thread, I don't seee any personal attacks before he went off with his rant. People were expressing and discussing opinions about Leica and a potential new product.

It's a good point but there's only so much any human can take! However, I have now read the thread and this isn't the case. The outburst was a tad strange. The content was correct, but the delivery a tad off!

I haven't read the original thread (anyone have a link handy?) but I would suggest we look at the comments before his and any personal attacks on him before we judge his reply. By just judging in this way, we are being one sided.

I don't know the chap personally but have only ever heard good things about him from colleagues who have met Seal.

Cheers,

Edmond

I agree with Edmond. I find it inappropriate to judge a Seal from his comment. By the way, I agree with many points of Seal and I don't care that an ambassador has to behave in a certain way.

Best, E.

But neither was I making judgements about dentists who might recommend a Leica, even if they were sometimes boring.

H Nelson (the admiral) had a relationship with an ambassorors wife, but he was still worth 1/2 the french and Spanish fleets in a close engagment.

Seal should be embraced by all M users. The RF M is the last of its kind in this mass produced DSLR age.

And what has the fact that Leica continues to produce RF cameras to do with this ill tempered singer and mediocre photographer?

For someone to be a "Leica Ambassador" they shouldn't have to be a "great photographer" as some have suggested. Those days are over. We are all photographers today. My mom probably shoots more photos with her iPhone than I do as a professional photographer. There is nothing wrong with buying a camera because you love to shoot. You don't need to be good at it.

If Seal is a guy who loves Leica and promotes the brands to his friends and to people he meets all over the world, I see nothing wrong with Leica making him an ambassador. I'm sure it's an honorary title in the sense that he probably doesn't need endorsement money. Every company caters to celebrity. There's nothing wrong with Leica doing the same.

And let's not forget, Seal gave away a Leica M9 in a contest that was FREE to enter. Compare that to the contests in PDN magazine where you have to pay like $35 to enter and first prize is "a camera". Seal didn't even make a big deal of the contest or use it to build up himself. It was only promoted on ONE website. And, the contest stated that your image didn't have to be "good" in a technical sense. It could be a phone shot. It just had to tell a story.

Seems to me Seal understands what photography is really about: having fun shooting and telling a story. I don't care if he is a "good" photographer.

The fact is, a person like Seal could go for any high end DSLRs in the market, instead opt for a RF. Testimony that an RF is well and alive in todays quick quick we need the highest ISO frenzy.

Sorry, can't follow you. Seal chosing a RF camera is testimony that RF technology is alive? Is that what you are saying?:( And Ashton Kutcher proves the opposite?

I'd rather say that as long as some pros and artists (photo) shoot with RFs we have testimony that RFs still can deliver the goods..

From his own words on his web-sight he carried around an X-100 for awhile too

but ended up not liking it. I’m just glad he has so much to say about assorted

cameras, paid by Leica or not. As I said earlier the Leica could be ‘’bling’’ and

being used for the same reason as a gold Rolex. So, he has had photo experience

and is certainly free to have his opinions and preferences like all of us.
