Purely judging from the examples seen on the forum, I would have to say it is an expensive way of making boring photos seem interesting. The claimed 'unique bokeh' does not really change that. Also, the size of the lens completely blows away the central advantage of the RF format - compactness. Absolutely agree. If you have one, have fun, but just speaking personally, I've used both the f1 and f0.95 and failed to be convinced that what you gain outweighs what you lose. I did the same with mine; all it takes is for the lens to be a little to one end within accepted tolerance and the body the other way and wide open one can miss the focus. You'll be so pleased when you get them back and working in harmony :-) I'd suggest everyone with a Noctilux send their cameras and lens to be calibrated (naturally unless they're 100% spot on). Nope, all my other lenses worked just fine before and after. f0.95 is such a narrow DOF that everything has to be absolutely precisely calibrated; if it's out even by the slightest amount, which won't show up on another lens, it does on the Nocti wide open. People that can't get a good keeper rate with this lens are not using it properly. Yes it's trickier to use at .95 but that's just the way it is.. time to back up. I don't understand all the haters of this lens... it has magic. Now having said that .. one thing I find annoying is all the gratuitous shallow DOF shots. A skilled photographer with a Summicron will beat the pants of a less skilled user with a Noctilux, shooting more so for bokeh than interesting content. As do most but its all relative and I bet that 95% of owners will never fully utilize its benefits other than taking a hell of a lot of test shots before selling it for a profit larger than the one made by the original retailer. It's the way of the Noctilux and the way of the current state of the Leica used market. There are only two people that I am aware of that use this lens almost daily and manage to fully utilize its qualities over other lenses. Most others are probably sitting on shelves waiting for prices to rise.... This will hopefully make dealers more selective to whom they sell to, like their regular customers who they trust aren't buying to make a quick buck. edmond_terakopian Posted August 14, 2011 Share #56 Posted August 14, 2011 It os a trickier lens o use wide open, purely because there's so little room for error as the DOF is so narrow. One definitely needs to practise. I will just add a piece of advice though; run some tripoded tests and make sure your camera and and Noctilux are perfectly matched, even if all you other lenses work perfectly. All that's needed is for the camera to be within tolerance in the plus side and for the lens to be within tolerance on the negative side (or the other way around) and you won't be able to focus properly. I had this problem; my other lenses were fine but the Noctilux was back focusing on my camera; both went off to Solms and problem solved :-) Definitely recommend this to anyone who gets a Noctilux or even a Summilux. It will be a shame to give up on these magnificent lenses and not discover their potential if you're not nailing the focus as it needs calibrating. Last weekend I did a little testshooting only wide open, nearly 75% of the images where slightly out of focus. So I need a visit to solms for calibrating too. But I love the successful focused images, threfore the noctilux is worth every penny for me.
