I bought a second hand 280/4 APO Telyt R and the filter inside the filter tray is missing. It is supposed to be a Series VI filter? Will any Series VI filter do or does it need to be one designed for this particular application? How do I go about finding one? Thanks for your help in advance.

There's no reason to believe that it's anything other than a standard series 5.5. According to the instruction booklet, it is required to be in place, since the computation of the lens is based on its presence.

UV is not ND i'm afraid but will it make a significant difference i don't know. I have lost the filter of my Nikon 300/4 many years ago and never replaced it as i failed to see the least difference on my pics. Perhaps the Leica's is as useless as that? Sorry i have no idea.

As mentioned above, the presence of that ND filter has been calculated in as has the clear protective glass up front. Does it visibly make a difference? I doubt Leica optical scientists would have insisted on both if there was no reason. And given that it's one of the highest, if not THE highest performing telephoto lens ever devised, who are we to argue?
