Leica M4- Black Paint

Hi!

I want to share photos of my Leica M4 Black Paint from 1967.

I have owned the camera for 26 years (bought it when I was 16) and used it actively until 2000, when the shutter was destroyed. Now I have sent the camera to Leica in Germany for mechanical restoration.

from what I've found online, this Leica M4 BP number 60 that is produced, the serial number is 1 181 560

Anybody know if this is correct?

Hope you enjoy the pictures!

...what an absolute cracker! I have no information on the serial number or quantity produced, but hope it produces more images upon its return from Solms.

Gee, a Leica m4 with probably a million frames gone through and it breaks already? :p

I'll bet Leica will appreciate going through your camera to find what's worn, what parts worked best, and it will be as good as new when returned - except for the finish. :)

Good for you. Let us know how it all works out!

That's what can be called "brassy" ! A beauty in its own way..

As for the serials, I had three black paint M4s in my Fontenelle Collection, with serials 1246970, 1247860 and 1266767. The two first ones are listed in Leitz books under "M4 Lack" (paint) as produced in 1969-70, the last one also under "M4 Lack" but in 1970. Yours is definitely an early black paint, but - as far as I know - not specifically listed as such.

An update on the Leica.

The camera is now on repairs in Germany. It was totally worn out and has been in repair for two månderer now.

But Leica say they will be able to fix it.

Leica in Norway has fallen in love with the camera and pay all expenses ..

Here are pictures from Bresson / Leica's blog in Norway.

The text is in Norwegian but the pictures are beautiful!

I think that's f****** awesome! Excuse my language, I'm too young and not as articulate as you folk, but it's amazing that Leica Norway is posting it on their blog and decided to pay expenses. It's a gorgeous piece.

Absolutely gorgeous! I have actuallu had two M4 in Solms for a complete checkup, although they were not quite as well used as this one. One of mine was in black paint and one in black chrome. Both returned in perfect condition. In both cases the top cover was changed and Leica reingraved the original serial numbers. Wonderful that Leica still has parts so we can service these beautiful cameras.

Just a further information on serials : I had three black paint M4s in my Fontenelle Collection, with serials 1246970, 1247860 and 1266767. I try to trace pixes, and will publish here if I succeed.

And here are the illustrations, easier to find than anticipated. The black paint M4 is the #1247860, and on one of the pixes, it is equiped with two rare matching items : black paint Summicron 2/35 nº 1632043 (with black paint brass cap) and black paint LeicaMeter MR4.

The camera is now back in perfect mechanical condition.

And it has been presented in photo pages and blogs around the world.

It looks like it's more about the camera from the Leica even in the future.

Here are some pictures from the photo group I'm in, Blender 8
