TshawM8 Posted May 31, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I hope that everyone reads through this whole post before replying with advice such as, "if you use that focal length than keep it." So here it goes. Today I acquired a 75 summarit for 1150 USD mint. I am debating whether I should keep it or sell it. Whether or not I use it seems irrelevant because I got it at such a killer price. I know that if I sold it I could make about 300 dollars profit. My work allows me to sell on its Amazon account, one that has a stellar rating, so I know the lens would move quick and for some extra money. The thing I am wanting advice about is whether or not this Summarit is worth keeping considering the amount I paid for it, and the amount I stand to make on it. I appreciate all of the advice you sage Leica lovers have to offer. Cheers, Thomas
Advertisement Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Hi TshawM8, Take a look here 75mm Summarit...What to do?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
vk2109 Posted May 31, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 31, 2011 Hi Thomas The problem is that you're going to hear the same type of response....First let me ask this : why did you buy the lens ? because of its attractive price ? because you need that focal there are also used used lenses I see on forum sold for bargain....or just because you want to start a dealer business Just test the lens and see if you like that focal ? if not then sell it ! it's $300 that you can invest in something else ! if you like then keep it and use it ! lens keep their value I bought an 90 elmarit in mint condition for $800 in europe...I could just sell it here in the us for the double, however I want to keep it ! I don't say I am loosing money because I actually by buying this that a summarit 90 ! TshawM8 Posted June 1, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted June 1, 2011 Thanks for the reply! I initially bought it for the price, I haven't tried any of the 75's before so I figured why not? I was just curious whether or not people would scream to keep it right away simply because pepper have had great experience with it. I guess I should just try it out and see. Maybe I'll keep it even if I hate it :-P
lars_bergquist Posted June 1, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2011 I agree with Thomas. If you are a photographer and not a speculator, try the lens out and see if you like it. I know nothing about your preferences or way of seeing and shooting, but this I know: That's a superb lens The old man from the Age of the 7.3cm Hektor
Per P. Posted June 1, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 1, 2011 Assuming you don't need the money for feeding your family I would hang on to it. I have the same lens. It is far from my most used lens but I have no intentions of selling it. My reasoning is that WHEN i want to use a 75mm then I have one, and I know that as soon as I sell it I will be wanting to use it all the time. It helps that it's a superb lens
luigi bertolotti Posted June 1, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 1, 2011 For 2 years about, the Summarit 75 has been my favorite tele on M8.. it's really a lens of astonishing quality... then I could not resist when found an almost mint used Elmarit M 90 (chrome... ) .. but am far from selling it: it's more compact and light and IQ is comparable to the 90; for completness I add that, having been used a lot, a certain play in the front element has emerged... not influent on image quality... but a bit annoying and surely a factor that would lower its evaluation if put for sale. 01af Posted June 1, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you want to use a 75 mm lens then keep it—it's a damn fine lens. If you don't want it then sell it. As simple as that! The price you bought it for doesn't matter. If it was cheap then you're enjoying an advantage either way.
jaapv Posted June 1, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 1, 2011 If you are a photographer use it, if you are a lens trader sell it.

gib_robinson Posted June 4, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 4, 2011 Done. Might as well keep it. Thanks guys Cheers, Thomas Absolutely the right decision -- at least until you get to know it. The Summarits are wonderful lenses, very flare resistant, compact, high IQ, only slightly slower than the more expensive Summicrons. I rarely go out without my 75mm (a pre-Summarit Summicron). I find it more useful than the 90mm. Frequently it is the 3rd lens I carry after a 35 and 50. I wasn't sure how I would use it until I put it on my camera and let it show me how to use it. Street or landscape, I find it very flexible. Now I can visualize in 75 and have a pretty good sense of when to reach for it. Still, it's a great teacher, whenever I put it on the camera and let it lead me to images, it teaches me how to see. --Gib
