Settings for using M5, #5 and Press#25 bulbs on IIF

I want to use traditional bulb flash with both my IIF and Rolleiflex 3.5 Planar E cameras. I am just in course of replacing the 100μf capacitors on the CEYOO and Rolleiflash. I have large numbers of #5 and Press #25 bulbs in blue and clear. I have some M5 clear bulbs, which I can use with the small cap adaptor I have. The Rolleiflex is easy, with its leaf shutter, as I can take the settings off the remains of some the bulb boxes I have. The M5 bulbs might be better on the IIF, due to their longer flash duration. After searching for a few weeks I have managed to find precisely 3 focal plane FP26 bulbs, 2 blue and 1 clear. I can buy more from the US but due to their scarcity, they are not cheap.

Can anyone advise me of some suggested shutter speeds, red dial settings and guide number settings for the five types of bulb I have #5, #5B, P25, P25B and M5. None of these bulbs are covered in the settings list in the instruction manual of the IIF/IIIF. I am using either Rollei Retro 100 ISO or 200 ISO black and white film.

Hi Wilson,

I think that most if not all of these bulbs with the exception of the FP26 are "M-class", with a modest ignition delay and shortish duration, suitable for the M setting on in-lens shutters. That should give you enough to start experimenting with the IIf: look in the manual for a bulb that doesn't work at exposures shorter than 1/25 or 1/50 and at those speeds has a synch dial setting a bit earlier than electronic flash but probably later than a FP-class bulb. The guide number should be pretty much the same as for the Rolleiflex with the same shutter speed.

Also, there seems to be a lot of useful information at http://www.flashbulbs.com (but you need to turn off your speakers to avoid the incredibly annoying music which starts up again every time you load a page).

The models compete very successfully with the flashbulbs. In fact, this site is worth a look regardless of flashbulbs.

It looks from Bill Cress' site that there is not a whole lot of difference between the #5 bulb and the Press 25. Given the variability from bulb to bulb due to age, I would guess that I can use the same table for both for blue and maybe allow one stop's difference for the clear, where the press 25 is a bit more powerful. It looks like I would have to use 1/25th to get the full guide number and a red dial setting of around 13. If I used 1/50th (which is more practical), I think I am right that I should change the red dial to 11 or 12 and reduce the flash guide number by around 30%. I suppose trial and error is going to be the best way.
