Hello everybody,

I have seen and tried a Zeiss Distagon 15mm f/2.8 ultra wide angle on my my M9

It is a second hand lens but it looks and works very good and make good pictures, very sharp and the perspective seems to be very good in comparaison of Nikon and Canon ultra wide lens. the price is not expansive 1500 swiss francs instead 4800....

Is anybody using this lens ? Any advices will be very cool and usefull.

(I am a photojournalist most of the time working with Nikon gears, but I am also a old Leica user since M4-P, M6 and M8 owner)

Many Thanks in advance

Triman

Hi, Triman,

It's a great lens: the widest available in such a broad aperture, low distortion, close focus of 0.3 meters, wonderful, solid build.

There are, of course, rational arguments that qualify my enthusiasm, namely the lack of rangefinder coupling so you have to estimate focus and check it against the LCD.

I find that easy as there are many other reasons a shot may not satisfy. Tweaking the focus is one of the simplest compensations.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for your post Mark.I have seen a used one and am looking at the pros and cons of this lens also. The biggest issue I could see is lack of rangefinder coupling but you seem to have overcome that problem.

That lens is fascinating, but you should consider a few cavets:

• It is very big and heavy. An instant enthusiasm in a camera shop does not always translate nto a permanent enthusiasm in the field, where you have to lug and heft the beast.

• It is true that superwide lenses lend themselves well to zone focusing, but a 2.8 lens has to be stopped down a bit for that even if it's a 15mm. And what use is then the speed (and the weight and the bulk)?

• Vignetting is so bad that Zeiss offer a center-graduated ND filter for it, just as with the old Hologon from the 1970's. Then there are all the other problems that uncoded wide lenses make on a M9. Check that you will have files that are useable. There are limits to what CornerFix and PhotoShop can do; and there may well be a limit to the PP work you are willing to spend on each frame.

• Is there a well defined job that you want that lens to do? Fiddling around with stunt lenses is fun for a while, but you tire of them pretty fast unless that inner drive is there.

The 15mm F4.0 lens looks interesting .Has anyone used a WATE in comparison to either of the 15mm primes.Unfortunatly Sean Reid has not tested both.Their is a report on both lenses by Michael Reichmann on his Lum.Landscape site which gives good reviews of both.Hope I am not highjacking this thread but the 2.8 distagon is serious money and my enthusiasm for it has gone over a cliff after reading the last few posts. Thanks guys I owe you a drink.:D

Just nitpicking ... the CV Super Wide-Heliar is an f/4.5, not f/4. Not that that would matter in actual photography ... :p It's a fantastic little lens, as I am sure many will agree! (Also, the new version II is M-mount, has a 52mm filter thread AND is rangefinder coupled!)

I have taken one frame with the WATE. It was nice. However, I do own the CV 15. It is an absolute steal. It's a wonderful little lens and definitely worth the couple hundred dollars the LTM version sells/sold for. However, I've been using my Zeiss 21 a lot more than my 15 in the last year.

There is a gentleman (z-geif) over on getdpi who has the Zeiss 15. Maybe you could write him and ask him is opinion. He's also currently selling his for $4000

Bonjour - Hello everybody and Thanks for all your nice answers,

I just bought the lens today, heavy but very good, I had also the grey filter,

Yes, I lost one aperture with it on the lens. The corners have some little magenta area while I was shooting a big building with a tough light at midday... . but any way I am a press photographer I can deal with this little default. This wide angle looks and works like a brand new lens. BUT now the camera bag is heavier ;)

Hello Triman

Thank you for starting a usefull post. I have been offered this lens at about 30% less than full price for an as new sample inc. 15mm finder. This is via a dealer who I have known for 25 years and trust so no issues with the lens and I will be able to test drive it.Glad you are happy with it.If you do have any issues I would be glad to hear about them.

Brian;)
