luigi bertolotti Posted May 30, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 30, 2011 I don't think it has a "commercial" font name : probably, was designed by Leitz stylists and the specification were kept inside the factory only for technical usage : engraving / stamping etc... I seem to remember that brochures and other printed material of the time do not use those characters in a typographical environment, so probably was not treated as a "font" but as a "logo". dsj Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted May 30, 2011 Thanks Luigi. it is a pity though. It is a really beautiful font, i think
jc_braconi Posted May 30, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 30, 2011 It is the same font that the M4-2 and M4 P but ...as the body is longer on the M5 they let more space in between the letters and this trick gives an aerial/space effect like in the "art déco" style. lars_bergquist Posted June 3, 2011 Share #11 Posted June 3, 2011 Hello dsj, Welcome to the Forum. You might PM Lars Bergquist. He knows something about Fonts. Best Regards, Michael Well, I agree completely with Luigi. I might add that the number of commercial 'effect' (not text) typefaces that are more or less similar to each other is so great that correctly identifying one by from a small sample is extremely chancy. Especially with sans serif fonts, of course. I did never work in that segment of the market, btw, I did mainly text fonts, apart from some forays into blackletter! I may add that the lettering style used on Leica equipment from the 1920's–'30's, which may also be a corporate style, is a very typical Jugend (roughly = Art Déco) product. pico Posted June 3, 2011 Share #13 Posted June 3, 2011 The font is called LG 1050 In my day there were typefaces with different fonts. Two different classifications of what today is simply called a 'font'. I blame Apple for our new convenient convention. For example the Pico1946 font of 12 points would be a different font in 10 points.
luigi bertolotti Posted June 3, 2011 Share #14 Posted June 3, 2011 Are you sure, Pico ? LG 1050 is the font used on modern lenses (not on Summarits)... the OP referred to the M5 and CL... I think is different... for instance, the "C" (in "LEICA CL" and in "SUMMICRON-M" on a today's lens) are so different that is hard to think of a common project... not to speak of the number "4" in today's s/n and in "M4 - P"....
