You got me wondering about the counterweight so I did some research: Bascule bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I have noticed that when the bridge is down, awaiting rail traffic, the locks come to a standstill as neither incoming or outgoing boat traffic with a mast of a certain height has enough clearance to make it safely under the bridge. The bridge is really quite busy with daily freight & passenger trains and commuter trains during the week. Not to mention it's a fantastic structure and how it frames the waterway.
