albert Posted May 29, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 29, 2011 K-H, I really enjoy looking at these. The bee is my favorite. The Bluejay really needs a complete make-over. He needs to gain a few ounces and his crest is pathetic. This observation has nothing to do with the photographer or the photograph.
albert Posted May 29, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 29, 2011 K-H, Please forgive me if I'm not correct but that "Jay" looks more like a Mountain Bluebird to me. See attachment.
k-hawinkler Posted May 29, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted May 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Paul, Stuart, Marc, Al, Thank you. Al, To me it looks like a very young Blue Jay. The Blue Jays seem to push everybody else around - except for the Curve-Billed Thrasher. I saw an approaching Curve-Billed Thrasher and an adult Blue Jay colliding at the feeder in mid-air. The Thrasher won, the Blue Jay took off. Too bad I didn't get an image of that encounter. Thanks again everybody for the feedback. Best, K-H.

albert Posted May 29, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 29, 2011 K-H, Yes ! That one gets my vote. Good research. &......You were right in the first place: It is a blue-colored Jay.
k-hawinkler Posted May 29, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted May 29, 2011 Al, Many thanks. I think that's it. Around here they colloquially just call 'em "Blue Jay". Now we know it's the Western Scrub-Jay. Here are a few more images of this bird: D3 + Telyt 400/5.6 I probably made the colors lighter than I should have. But, I wanted to bring out the eyes despite those pretty dark surrounding feathers. Best, K-H.
allamande Posted May 29, 2011 Share #12 Posted May 29, 2011 K-H. This is a delightful series beautifully done. I can almost here that Jay. And, yes, we have lots of them in the mountains here and they are commonly called Blue Jays, they have a raucous sound. Ece
