pico Posted May 26, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 26, 2011 Ya gotta be careful with automatic string substitutions. Early in the Web, a chap put in an automatic filter to replace naughty words. Jamie Roberts Posted June 3, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) ........ to automatically put Summi back on the front of annoying abbreviations. Gerry Seriously? Cron, Lux and Nocti are annoying abbreviations? Why, he asked? And is that why I didn't get to be an M9 firmware tester?
gyoung Posted June 3, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted June 3, 2011 Cron sounds like somebody from Dan Dare (that dates me) Lux is soap flakes..... Summicon and Summilux are such lovely lenses, don't deserve irreverent treatment Maybe if I crawl enough Leica will let me 'test' an M9 for a year or ten Gerry

MarkP Posted June 5, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 5, 2011 Oh please!!! Even GCMG Mr Puts uses SX, SM, SEM, etc. (or should that be Mister Puts?) Surely there are more 'nnoying things to worry about than 'ca lens 'brev'ns:p Mark
bill Posted June 6, 2011 Share #11 Posted June 6, 2011 Perhaps I should start referring to my 'nnar and 'gon...? Jargon and slang is a proven way of closing ranks against outsiders and newcomers. Is that what we want? Regards, Bill

stunsworth Posted June 6, 2011 Share #13 Posted June 6, 2011 Ya gotta be careful with automatic string substitutions. Early in the Web, a chap put in an automatic filter to replace naughty words. There was the story of an author who decided to change the name of one of the characters in his novel, so used automatic find and replace. Unfortunately that meant there was a reference to Michaelangelo's Derek (maybe not Derek, but you get the picture. Also AOL used to cause problems for people in Scunthorpe as it didn't like a certain combination of letters in the town's name.
pgk Posted June 6, 2011 Share #14 Posted June 6, 2011 Jargon and slang is a proven way of closing ranks against outsiders and newcomers. Is that what we want? Language evolves or becomes stale. Any technical discussion will end up with jargon, abbreviations, slang and more. If you don't like it then you don't need to use it, but trying to check its use is unlikely to succeed if the adjusted words become popular, and trying to do so is a forlorn hope once this happens. If the adjustments don't become popular then they will die a natural death and there is nothing to worry about.
mjh Posted June 6, 2011 Share #15 Posted June 6, 2011 If the adjustments don't become popular then they will die a natural death and there is nothing to worry about. I don’t think that even addresses Bill’s complaint. If this was a closed community then its members could be trusted to arrive at some sort of compromise eventually. But this community isn’t closed, and let’s be thankful for that. Rather there is a constant influx of newcomers and these could easily feel uneasy when older members used some arcane language made up of abbreviations that no newcomer could hope to understand. pgk Posted June 6, 2011 Share #17 Posted June 6, 2011 But this community isn’t closed, and let’s be thankful for that. Rather there is a constant influx of newcomers and these could easily feel uneasy when older members used some arcane language made up of abbreviations that no newcomer could hope to understand. There are other places on the web where the same abbreviations are used. Before I visited here I hadn't seen many of the abbreviated lens names but they make sense especially when several similar lenses (ie 35s) are being discussed. I suspect that many people are like myself and quickly become comfortable with abbreviated names. Personally I see no problem in using either the abbreviated or none abbreviated name and like I said if an abbreviated name doesn't gain popularity it will remain confined to a few users and eventually cease as they leave the forum. The web has created new words in its short existence and language seems to me to evolve quicker than ever these days.

Is that what we want? Regards, Bill Hi Bill, Yes, for example as a doctor one has to be very careful not to slip into jargon when explaining matters to patients. However, amongst peers in any situation, jargon allows quick and efficient transmission and sharing of information and ideas. Regards, Mark
