insomnia Posted May 26, 2011 Share #21 Posted May 26, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I received mine yesterday and changed the shoulder-pad with the one from my Billingham-Bag. So far I am happy with it, although fast movements can activate buttons and lead to unnecessary screen usage. I also had to think about a problem when using jeans due to the metal studs that could cause ugly scratches, so I made something of foam material as a temporary solution. A leather-solution to cover the stud at the right pocket would be the best.
Advertisement Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Hi insomnia, Take a look here M9 with Sun Sniper strap. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
GlennB Posted May 26, 2011 Share #22 Posted May 26, 2011 I use a similar product - The Luma Loop. I like the sling idea. It is more comfortable and the camera bounces less on my hip/back than it does on my chest. You can view a video about the version I have here. They is now a newer version on their website. Roy BE Careful if you go to this site. The video seems to have installed a Trojan on my PC. Had to get our systems person to fix my machine ! Guess I should have read this entire thread first for others' heads up about the problem ! Of course YMMV. Glenn

PayPerView Posted May 31, 2011 Share #24 Posted May 31, 2011 I picked up an R strap two weeks ago and was pleased to see them reviewed in the current issue of LFI...I had been using a Luigi half case that covers the tripod mount and instead attached the R strap to the side of my M9 and lived with it that way for a bit. Then this weekend, I decided to remove the case and attach it to the bottom plate and I like it much better...very happy with this strap..it's the best I've ever used. And I will be happily selling my beloved Luigi case...I'm tired of pampering my camera..I want to use it and in reality I don't think there is huge protection from any half case anyway! Philinflash Posted May 31, 2011 Share #25 Posted May 31, 2011 I have zero experience with this or similar straps, but know I could never feel comfortable about using an easily removable part (the Leica bottom plate) to hold my camera in midair on a day-to-day basis. Later, Clyde I would worry that the baseplate would bend, even before it comes off the body. Neither option appeals. I suppose you could attach it to a strap-mounting grommet the way the Leicagoodies version connects. That latter item is what I use and I intend to stick with. Yes, I think that is the way to attach it. I attached the R strap on my Canon to the original strap mount because I didn't want the lug that attaches to the tripod mount to scratch everything I placed the camera on. On the M9 I would still have that issue, but also I don't want my $10,000 camera/lens combination to rely on the M9 baseplate staying together. tdtaylor Posted June 1, 2011 Share #27 Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have used several Black Rapid products for years, even with a Nikon D3 and 200VR f2. Excellent products and never had any issues, plus made the weight bearable. With a 24-70, can go all day. I have been using the Leica Goodies product with their clasp for the lugs for about 6 months, and like it. I have the D clasps for LeicaTime wriststrap and neckstrap, so in seconds I can change between the three, depending on what I need. I have found the key to keeping the bounce out of the hip placement is make the strap as short as possible while being able to easily bring the camera to the eye. jmkays Posted June 1, 2011 Share #28 Posted June 1, 2011 I can vouch for the Black Rapid system. Has been very secure with my D3s. Seems overkill for the tiny Leica, but it comes down to personal preference. Note - Luma has been around as long as Black Rapid and has a good rep. It's highly unlikely anything on their site would result in any sort of Trojan virus.
Nortega Posted June 1, 2011 Share #29 Posted June 1, 2011 It is the first link in Roy's post to completedigitalphotography.com that has a virus embedded in it. It appears to still be up and unedited. If you are running a windows machine (and not a super cool Mac user like others helpfully pointed out) you definitely should not click on the first link in post #9 on this thread. t024484 Posted June 1, 2011 Share #30 Posted June 1, 2011 I have the Sniper Strap Pro. The part going around my shoulder is a bit thick but helps to keep the whole thing in place. But the steel cord inside the strap and the ball bearing attachment to the camera makes it a lot safer against robbery than the standard strap that comes with the camera. Apart from these safety considerations I find little difference in use compared to the standard strap. Hans
nggalai Posted June 1, 2011 Share #31 Posted June 1, 2011 Hi there, I’ve carried an M3 with 50mm Summarit on both the Sun Sniper The One and The Compact for a month now. No bending of the bottom plate, no problems with the tripod thread (even though I had to put a 3/8"-to-1/4" bushing in it). As the M9’s bottom plate is made of solid brass, too, and has similar fixtures to the M3’s I don’t believe there’s any chance of it bending or jumping out of its bolts. Especially as the M9 seems to be lighter than the M3. I’ve only carried the M9 on the Sun Sniper for two days, but well, I don’t expect any problems. I’ve used Sun Snipers on my µFT cameras since, well, forever, and I find it far more comfortable than standard camera belts. As has been mentioned before, I especially like to carry the cameras under my raincoat in iffy weather and still being able to get to them easily. My back is happy about the Sun Snipers, too. Cheerio, -Sascha
jrovner Posted September 1, 2011 Share #32 Posted September 1, 2011 I'm considering the use of Luma's LoopIt with my M9. Does anyone know whether it's safe to dangle the M9 from a single strap lug for extended periods? Thanks very much.
ddbg Posted September 1, 2011 Share #33 Posted September 1, 2011 I was considering a similar product called C-Loop Camera Strap Mount Solution and Glide Strap for Cameras. More like combining the idea from Sun Sniper with R-Strap. I haven't purchase this C-loop/Glide Strap but would like to know if anyone purchase this and if it's any good. I think it's a great idea but you have to remove the half case that I have on my M9. I don't feel comfortable without it.

My thoughts too. How secure is the bottom plate, specially with this type of stress, which it wasn't designed to handle. I can see it being ok with an SLR or compact camera, as they have solid bodies, which includes a fixed bottom plate.
jaapv Posted September 1, 2011 Share #35 Posted September 1, 2011 Agree. It is a great strap to use for a heavy combo, when I'm walking with the DMR/R8 Vario-Elmar 105-280 (over 3 Kg) together it is ideal, but I would not consider hanging my M9 there. I think it's a great idea but you have to remove the half case that I have on my M9. I don't feel comfortable without it. I can't imagine going back to a regular strap. It takes a bit of time for the mind to get around the concept. The only real danger as I see it (and it's a legitimate one), is user error and not affixing the plate to the body correctly. I also was reluctant to remove the half case but now that I've lived with this setup for several months, I much prefer it. Also was tired of babying and worrying so much about my M9 anyway. The new setup is just fantastic and has had a significant effect making shooting more comfortable, nature and just cool.
Jean-Michel Posted September 1, 2011 Share #38 Posted September 1, 2011 Hi, My two-cents take: different straps for different equipment. For ever, I have used the regular Leica camera straps, my favourite being the leather strap that came with my M4, back in 1968. With the M3 and M4 I managed to find the correct length so that I could hang both cameras off a shoulder and not have them interfere with each other. Usually I would have one camera on the shoulder and the main one in my hand withe the strap wrapped around my wrist; on occasion I would even have my M6 in my shooting hand and the other two on my shoulder -- never lost a camera. When I purchased the M9 I also bought a Rapid strap. It is a good strap but not for a Leica -- way too big. Works just fine on a Panasonic GH2 that we have. For my Canon 5D2, an UpStrap works best. The Leica strap works just fine for me. Jean-Michel
RoySmith Posted September 1, 2011 Share #39 Posted September 1, 2011 I'm considering the use of Luma's LoopIt with my M9. Does anyone know whether it's safe to dangle the M9 from a single strap lug for extended periods? Thanks very much. I used the LumaLoop, attached to a single strap lug, daily on a recent 4 wk holiday and had no problems. As others have said, the alternative is the tripod socket in the removable baseplate which is not designed for this kind of use and is also a risk. With a regular strap if 1 lug breaks the camera will likely fall, but it would have only half the stress on each lug.
