Jobo Giga One, anyone?

I'm going on a shoot in late Feb. and am considering a Giga One 40gb storage device. Has anyone used one of these with an M8 and a Sandisk Extreme III? I know the chances are slim, but it never hurts to ask. Also, I've read the thread on the more expensive VuPro, which is overkill for what I'm looking for in a device. I'm just hoping someone can give me a thumbs up/down before I pay as no one in the shops works with the M8. Thanks.

I use one. I also have a Epson P2000.

Personally I mainly use the Giga1.

Its small, you can connect it to the computer without a power cord (not possible with the Epson.

It also works like a card reader.

I sometimes have problems when I copy large number of images from the giga to my compter -hard-drive.

Copying sundisk cards to the giga works fine.

I use 1 and 2 Giga cards.

One funny thing: for the 2 Gigi I can not use the giga like a card reader and browse directly through the imags. I first have to copy the images onto the giga hard drive and the can browse through them.

The 1 Giga cards work without any problem.

I like it the Giga 1, very usefull for backup and quick copying files from sd card without having a coimputer with you.

If you look through the forum search engine, I have a feeling that this, or a similar thread has come up before - I'm stretching my memory but think that Erl from Australia has been using this or a similar device extensively.

Hope this helps

Grant, Robert is correct, I do use the GigaVu Pro with 40Gig HD. I am very pleased with it for my purpose, which initially was to travel. At the end of each day I dumped my shoot onto the GigaVu and after a month of travel had only used about 2/3rd's of the total capacity. Can't remember how many pics now but I remember shooting only RAW to save space by not shooting the jpegs as well. Retrospectively, I could have easily shot both. This was pre-M8 (it was just being announced). I was shootin the Epson RD1 which produces smaller files (6MB) than the M8. My M8 returned from Solms two days ago so I will test its compatability for you. I am confident that it will do very well as a storage device to empty your cards but doubt that it will read ther DNG files for visual inspection. I wil report back.

I now use the GigaVu as a permanent storage on any large shoot such as weddings, theatrical performance, etc where I potentially shoot more capacity than the cards I carry. Currently I carry two 2GB cards + a 1GB card. With the M8 I suspect I will increase that.

 I just did a quick test and the GigaVu Pro it seems will NOT recognize my M8 files. Maybe I had some setting wrongly placed. My dog is demanding his walk now so must go. I will make more intensive checks after I return and have had luch. This thought is giving me indigestion already. The solution has to be simple, please!

can you view DNG files on this? Can't on the P2000.

Geoffrey,

The Giga One doesn't display images. The LCD gives a basic read out of what it's doing and remaining capacity but that's about it.

Thomas: I regret that my M8 has still not arrived so I can't confirm that it works with DNGs but FWIW it has no trouble with D2 and DL2 RAW files.

Pete.

That's great Thomas. But just to be perfectly clear, the Giga One definitely works with the M8, right? That is, of course, in your experience. Having a 20 to 40 gig dump that fits in my pocket, without having to lug a computer, is awesome. I'm also going to be back in New Orleans Thursday, and would love to tote one of these along.

Following my earlier post on this, I have just run tests on my returned M8 + GigaVu Pro.

My GV will NOT recognize any files from the M8, either DNG or jpegs at any compression setting. When I first got my M8 Ver. 1.06, I had no problems. Now, after upgrade in Solms to Ver. 1.09 I cannot get the GV to see any files.

The GigaVu Pro Evolution claims to be compatible, but the earlier Pro (my ver.) makes no mention of it. The problem now is: who do I chase to check possiblity of compatability. Leica or JOBO? It still puzzles me why it won't read plain ordinary jpegs, even if they do come from the M8.

Grant,

the Giga one does copy M8 files to the hard drive. The Giga One does NOT display any images, it does not have an image viewing function.

Thomas, which firmware ver. is your M8. See my experience posted above.

Erl,

you have the Giga vue with display function and I have the Giga One which just copies files to the hard drive.

I am not saying that the Vu works with M8 files but only that the Giga one can copy M8 files.

I have Vers. 1.09 on my M8.

I think thre is some misundersatnding of these viewer devices . Almost every model will copy a DNG file from a M8 and DMR. It basically is just a battery operated hard drive that you can download your card too, so in that function almost any make or model will do that. Now the second part of the device is some models the images are viewable on there screen so you can review your images and reason they cost 400 dollars is for that capability. On that note I am not sure any of them can view a M8 image yet , the DMR i have been waiting for over a year for one of these companies to do this otherwise a 200 dollar unit is a better choice if I can't SEE my images. The Gigi Pro Evolution was the one model that was supposed to do this but to this date i have not seen one make it market, I could be wrong on this and it maybe out but I am still waiting for such a device so I can VIEW the images. Now i understand there was a firmware upgrade for the Gigi Vue different model here folks that was able to view the DMR images but the new Gigi pro Evolution was a much nicer device on paper. This begs the question is the Gigi Pro Evolution on the market now

It is in stock at B&H, $694 for the 80gb version.

Jobo GIGA Vu PRO evolution - 80GB

Somebody on the forum posted that it works with the M8, but will only display the embedded preview, not convert the DNG for zooming. I am not sure if it works with the DMR yet though.

The current compatibility list is at this URL. Jobo is a German company, you'd think they'd want to support the home team....but they don't even list the DMR and the M8 only supports Previews.

Here's the thread on the newer Jobo Giga Vu Evolution:

http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/14833-using-jobo-giga-vu-pro-evo.html

Guy is correct that pretty much all of these storage devices will copy a DMR or M8 raw file (or an AVI video, or an MP3 or whatever) without a problem. The GVPE, for example, simply creates a new directory for each flash card you download, and if you created videos or audio clips, they will be in that directory along with your photos, even if you can't play them back on the GVPE itself.

The 40 gigabyte GVPE was, by the way, kind of hard to find: I lucked out and found it showing as "In Stock" at Adorama and ordered it immediately. Upgrading to a larger hard drive looks easy and pretty inexpensive: 160 gigabyte hard drives cost about $150 these days. Only need an ordinary T6 Torx screwdriver to open the unit (1/4" screwdriver bits are too thick).
