she has a valid point. photography is perceived by some as to not be a real art form.

So if his was a fraudulent representation of a fraudulent art form, wouldn't that make OP more sincere in his efforts? lol

Sounds like a case of nouveau Bohemian clashing with nouveau riche. You really should post her mugshot here. Great story!

she has a valid point. photography is perceived by some as to not be a real art form. the propaganda can be very strong. no doubt this is her personal philosophy which is all part of her make up as an artist. she sees photography itself as a kind of fraud and in a modern world, digital photography, god forbid, even more so. you're cheating by looking at what you've captured rather than knowing. just look around at the vast majority of gaudy advertising photography where every inch is infinitely considered, post processed, satisfied perfection. there's absolutely no escaping it's endless grip. she would rightly question that perfection, otherwise she would not be an artist. if she is a painter, probably even more so. it would be vile to her. therefore it doesn't matter what kind of person you are, however rich, however nice or whichever kind of camera you use...you will still be a fraud and simply guilty by association because of what you adhere to. you are a scapegoat.

This s a very interesting projection of ideas, but I don't think she saw all photography as a fraud. Otherwise, if she did, the type or nature of the camera would have made no difference to her. No, it was that in her eyes I could have been a legitimate artist, but wasn't, because of my fraudulent equipment!

Also, I'm picking up quite a lot of antipathy towards "artists" in this thread (not this post, I must emphasise), accusing them of many of the things we resent them accusing us of.

Ironic is not the correct word for this, but I can't think what is at the moment. :)

Bringing a camera to an art exhibition is like bringing a guitar to a rock concert! :D

Taking an M6 to a exhibition never put me in trouble even with Tri-x ;)

But I understand that film is " hot" with the artists nowadays?

There always exists a sort of pseudo artist that has to be different or counter-cultural. They don't want to conform or have anything to do with the status quo. They think of themselves as individuals and think of themselves as different and unique from the rest. Unfortunately, that is simplistic and that is just another uniform to wear. Unique comes from a solitary point and enlightens. It does not come from a derivative of ideas that create the solitary image they want.

Digital is avant garde. It is cutting edge. No uniform. It competes. Nothing wrong with film. I like it. But, it is not my uniform. By the way, film is not real and digital is fraudulent. Doesn't have anything to do with that type of construct. It is all about what the individual does with their medium, all of us, you and me. That is what defines an artist for me. Dare I say, she is the fraudulent one.

reminds me of Monty Pyton's Life of Brian, balcony scene:

Brian:" Go away, you don't have to follow me. You're all individuals! "

People: " YES WE'RE ALL INDiVIDUALS"

one person in the crowd: " I'm not "

That crayzzzeeeeeeee chick sounds like an egocentric nutcase. I mean, really, she thinks you are tyring to fool her. She expects you to be shooting with a film camera....and what, does she get to decide which choice of tools confer artistic credibility.

Whaaaaaat?!

I think I would have laughed so hard I would have had to be forcibly removed.

Honestly, you don't get that kind of reaction in my world. Scientists prefer to discuss specifications, you know.

harm in that is there. I guess if your a pro and its a tool then things are a bit different.

Brian

You are probably right. No offense intended to Peter. I come up with the dumbest things sometimes. Just today I was chastised here for asking a stupid question.

We are okay, Peter. I hope.

... talented ceramicist who makes the most fantastic huge vases that stand on the floor...

I trust you did not ask her whether her vases were genuinely old objects?

Camera enthusist don't really exist here; as people with free time in California's Bay Area are typically called 'homeless'. Here protogs buy either Canon or Nikon and don't know of the others existence, let alone any other type of camera. The highligh of my camera related chats here was when I found someone who works with Hasselblads and other medium formats.

Not that it bothers me though, having my equipment eyed never made me feel at ease and I rarely have that happen here :D

Perhaps the word you are looking for is "hypocritical"...

Oh Art people are my favorite. And I am not talking about artists, I am talking about "art people." Was she wearing ugly clothes and glasses trying to hide that she is actually pretty? sounds like she was definitely trying to hide that she could possibly be nice to a man she just met.

Btw. had you told her how much the M9 cost, she would have looked down upon you even more. Art has to be shot on a Holga ..., or on a $100 box of ten Polaroids from the Impossible Project that your heart surgeon daddy ordered for her for art school.
