sblitz Posted June 21, 2011 Share #461 Â Posted June 21, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) now that the new m9p is official, and duly placed in the array of items at the top of this forum page, i cannot imagine anyone seriously wanting to swap out an existing m9 for an m9p, at least not anyone who owns the camera for taking pictures rather than looking good. interesting how leica and others make note of the more stealth like qualities of not having the label on the front. i don't know about the rest of you, but when people notice me they notice i am about to take their picture, they aren't particularly interested or attuned to the camera being a leica m9. the red dot attracts no more or less attention from passerbys, aside from photogs themselves of which there are plenty walking around and working in nyc, than it attracts mosquitoes on a warm muggy ny summer night.....anyway, thats my two cents worth which is worth a little less everyday. i do, however, like the leica script on the top. MF is a market where high ISO performance matters less and where the sensor can make a killing, image quality-wise, by its sheer size alone. But brute force won’t help you at 36 x 24 mm and smaller; that’s where innovation is crucial and whether we like it or not, the focus of R&D is on CMOS-based designs. mjh Posted June 21, 2011 Share #466  Posted June 21, 2011 I am sooooo happy, I just bought a regular M9 … and a bit disappointed, Leica couldn't come up with a meaningful technical update, rather a half iteration of what has been done with the M8.2 :-( Before I had learned about the M9-P I hadn’t expected any new M model this year. So in a way Leica has managed to exceed my expectations ;-)  Seriously: there was no reason to expect a model significally different from the M9 at this time, when the M9 is still less than 2 years old. denoir Posted June 21, 2011 Share #468  Posted June 21, 2011 Meh, that M9-P doesn't even have the distinction of being a disappointment.  The new 21mm lens on the other hand..the MTF charts look amazing. The gold standard for UWA lenses is the Zeiss 21 Distagon and this is how the new Super-Elmar-M 21mm compares:  (Zeiss black, Leica red). The first chart compares f/2.8 to f/3.4 so it's not an entirely fair comparison - but it's just half a stop difference.  Welcome, dear visitor! Â But why can't Leica just use Gorilla Glass on all of their screens like everyone else, and charge, oh, say a $50 premium? Â And more discreet? Oh, yeah, except for the huge Leica script on top of the camera (which is pretty but by no means discreet). Â If you want discreet I'll sell you a square piece of photographers tape to go over the black dot and a plastic toothpick to pick out the M9 white paint for $100. Â I think, it was pretty neat form Leica, to remove front labeling and reintroduce the scripted top plate. Only the scripts orientation has been gotten wrong, as when chimping, the script is upside down to see from spectators :-( Â Toot pick, tape, black dots and well cut iPhone screen savers are a cheap and practical way to go. Â The longer I think about it, the more strange this new M9-P looks to me, especially the advertisement text on the Leica site and the "-P" designations - come on folks, even the hardest Leica nut must admit, this is ridiculous. Read the text, let it sink and rethink, what actual changes the camera has been gotten. Â It would have been more clever from Leica, to introduce the changes within a new digital M a la carte program (even with more margin than the packaged changes, to make up with the more extensive production management of an a la carte production). Â Really was thinking more of lookie loos and potential thieves and not subjects. Yeah, thinking of a chrome one as a second body myself. It's pretty great looking. I think the M9-P is absolutely beautiful but I like the images from my M9 and there is no point from an image-taking standpoint even if the cosmetics are nice. To me it is the epitome of GAS to change from M9 to M9-P. Â I look forward to see what Leica will offer in the way of substantive improvement in a M9.2 or a M10.
