Overgaard Posted May 11, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just announced. As you may recall, the iView Media Pro software for managing photo archives virtual was bought by Microsoft, and then it went downhill with each upgrade. Then some months ago it was bought by Capture One (who has been selling it as the archive tool for their RAW software), and now the Media Pro 1 is out. They offer upgrade deal for those who have the previous versions of the tool: Media Pro photo manager I've upgraded my Microsoft Expression Media Pro 2 to this and will be doing a small review in the next few days. Advertisement Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Hi Overgaard, Take a look here Microsoft Expression Media replacement (finally). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted May 11, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 11, 2011 Thanks, but it's come too late for me. I used iView, then Expression media pro, but changed to Lightroom years ago. I can't see myself going back. It's worth a try for anyone thinking of buying a DAM for the first time though.

I can't see myself going back. It's worth a try for anyone thinking of buying a DAM for the first time though. It does something different than Lightroom. LR is real-time archive, DAM is virtual archive so that you can move around images and have doublets while the originals are still in their original place. So if you make selections for articles, clients, and if you have several editions of images, a virtual DAM software is the solution (DAM=DIgital Asset Management)

You can certainly group images together - either by keywords, properties (coloured flags), or collections. You can also have multiple copies of the same original image, and have each copy processed in a different way.
Overgaard Posted May 11, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted May 11, 2011 Download the 30 day trial and you will see the difference. Much smaller and lighter program where you can drag-and-drop previews into different folders and keep track of all versions. I for example always have four sizes of images for web, picture agencies, etc and importing those into LR would make it huge and slow.

The main strength of LR is its non-destructive nature. You can create virtual copies for your various clients while still only retaining your master file. When you need a specific output, you generate that version tailored to your need. LR merely stores your instructions; no need to create multiple 'real' files which inflate your storage load. johnwolf Posted May 13, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 13, 2011 Thorsten is right that if you want to store and managed multiple finished sizes of the same file, then LR is probably not the tool. True, you can export then reimport finished sizes. Lately, though, I'm really into export presets and have developed many of them. You can then keep one master and use presets to export single or batch images of the desired size, filename, location, etc. A really good approach. But you still don't see the exported files in LR unless you import them or set dynamic folder updating. LR is basically a front-end processing tool and not a file manager. swamiji Posted May 13, 2011 Share #11 Posted May 13, 2011 I am waiting for Thorsten's review, not only because I respect his opinion, but because I think I am a perfect candidate for this type of product. I use C1, LR, and Aperture. Switching from one to the other to maximize the strength of each. Importing from my camera into any one of these products makes it inefficient in the others. So I now keep my images stored in a separate drive, and import only what is needed, for each project. Media Pro, just may be what I need to tie all this together. There are other products, but since C1 is a primary tool, and Media Pro is supposed to integrate well, it has caught my attention.

psquared Posted May 13, 2011 Share #14 Posted May 13, 2011 I gave up on the original LR because it was too slow and never went back. I've been using ACDSee Pro for DAM after giving up on iView Media. Does anyone have experience with both ACDSee and the new Media Pro 1?
