peter_n Posted February 3, 2007 Share #21 Posted February 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) My personal preference is for # 3. There's lots (and I do mean lots) of discussion on the LL article and the Sonnar 1.5 over at RFF.
Advertisement Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 Hi peter_n, Take a look here Which pic is more pleasing?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
xray Posted February 6, 2007 Share #22 Posted February 6, 2007 Your first image is properly exposed and the second is over about 1/3 stop and the third is about 1/2 stop over. Test each lens at f 2 and hit the exposure exactly the same for each if you want a valid test.
chanyr Posted February 6, 2007 Share #23 Posted February 6, 2007 I was testing three lenses today - 50 cron, 5- Noct and Zeiss Sonnar ZM 50 - Took this test shot of a rose.. Which shot to you has the most pleasing look? Noct was at 1.4, the ZM was at 1.5, and the cron at F2 I know what my preference is, just wondering what others think. I like the 3rd one the best because it looks really sweet and pleasing, the 1st one appears to have more pop at first, but its too contrasty and the flower lacks soft hues and a smooth look. mitchell Posted February 8, 2007 Share #24 Posted February 8, 2007 I like the third. But, I wonder if the exposure is equivelent. It seems lighter. The first has snap. The third glow. Thanks for posting these. I learn from these kinds of comparisons. Best, Mitchell
colin Posted February 10, 2007 Share #25 Posted February 10, 2007 D'oh... For some reason I was thinking Summilux. You are absolutely right (dammit ). So. To be valid the test needs to be either all shot at f2, or all shot at their respective maximum apertures - f2, f1.4. f1.4. Each proves something different though. Regards, Bill D'oh. You did it again! And got the Zeiss wrong too :-) How about, f/2, f/1.5 and f/1 ? colin
colin Posted February 11, 2007 Share #26 Posted February 11, 2007 That Summilux shot was wonderful. It would really be nice to see shots from the current Noctilux, Summilux, Summicron, Planar, Sonnar and all the CVs all at wide open, f/2, f/4 and f/5.6. It would be nice - but who's to do it? :-) colin

tom0511 Posted February 21, 2007 Share #28 Posted February 21, 2007 I just wandered over to Luminous Landscape, where appeared recently a look at three Zeiss ZM lenses (the 15mm/2.8, 21mm/2.8 Biogons and 50mm/1.5 Sonnar). There was some criticism made of the quality of the Zeiss lens when used at maximum aperture, as in the example in this thread. A question was sent to Zeiss, and they responded as here (which is at the foot of the original piece, so it can be read complete by those who've not seen it yet). Reading between the lines though does suggest to me that a picture of a rose is not the best test of this lens's capabilities, and (wearing a "purist's" hat) maybe colour film is not best suited to it at all? I have read Zeiss´s comments about the sonnar. I just wonder for what subject and type of image the "special" look of the sonnar will be seen as something adorable? I am interested in any images where the character of the Sonnar wide open is recognized as something good/special. Anybody? If the lens was cheaper I would very well like to experiment with it. luigi bertolotti Posted February 21, 2007 Share #29 Posted February 21, 2007 I prefer the first one: not surprisingly, flower is better focused (f2...) : I am surprised by the different color balancing: did you pay attention to the parameters in making the jpegs? I am not an expert in Digital processing, but hope you have taken attention to this issue.
jeff_m Posted February 23, 2007 Share #30 Posted February 23, 2007 I like the first and the last. The middle one is not appealing at all.
M_6 Posted February 23, 2007 Share #31 Posted February 23, 2007 i personally prefer the no 3 shot. i like the old leica lenses that produce this kind of bokeh. i had bought a 75 lux, because it can produce a protrait with a very special kind of bokeh that i can't find in any other lenses.
