Sorry, I have nothing to show, so in case my answer turns out to be correct this game is probably (I think) open to anyone who can contribute a picture...

To me the building to the right looks like Stuttgart Main Station...

You know, the large 16-track central terminus that famously will be replaced over the next years (decades?) by a slim 8-track subway stop ("Stuttgart 21", S 21)... at the bargain cost of 6.8 billion euros if current estimates are correct... Let's see how that is going to turn out...

Again, this is just to try get things going again; such a perfectly nice game thread just cannot be allowed to fizzle out at "S 21", of all places...

I am a little bit confused - what is the solution to Orient XI's riddle? He did not confirm Stuttgart although it may be correct.

I understand, and normally would agree that direct confirmation should be given. But this case really does appear clear-cut, and, as Lars points out, Orient XI has not commented for more than a week. Perhaps it makes you feel better if you re-examine the wealth of information given by Orient XI:

Message #2304 - "royal" palace in the city center.

Following messages: "Germany" - yes. "South of Hesse" - yes.

Now, ignoring for simplicity any and all complications with respect to the Austrian Empire, there were just 4 kingdoms in "Little Germany" altogether: Prussia, Saxony, Wuerttemberg, and Bavaria - and only the last two of these are "south of Hesse".

The city shown is certainly not Munich. The layout of its formerly royal real estate is very different. So it has to be Stuttgart, capital of the "Kingdom of Wuerttemberg" (1806 - 1918), right?

So let's thank Lars for his very beautiful new riddle, and for salvaging this thread...

Sorry, pre-1866 there were 5: Hanover as well. But this is well north of Hesse...

Stefans is quite correct Stuttgart Hbf appears on the right of the photo. The neues Schloß is in the centre. The photo was taken from high on the TV tower in the spring of 1989; I am informed this is no longer possible as the public are no longer admitted to the TV tower. Congratulations again Stefans!

I am sorry that I have been off-line for a week. Appropriately I dropped a heavy guide book to Germany on my Wi-Fi receiver:mad: and have had it replaced with an internal receiver.

Yes, looked like Bosporus but this was just a gut feeling. Thanks!

I currently have only a very limited choice of more or less suitable pics but let's try this one:
