Time for hints - channel of a river that had a symphonic poem writen about it......

Good luck,

Jan

I am wondering: Might the channel have been used for powering mills, down at the foot of a large and extremely famous fortress? Might the river later join another river and take its name, although it is actually much longer and larger than the river whose name it takes? And might this "symphonic poem" perhaps be by Bedrich Smetana?

(I am sorry; I cannot venture a guess as I have nothing to show...)

A very beautiful picture in any case...

Thanks, Bob. Yes, it is indeed Prague and a narrow, man-made channel of the river Vltava (Moldau). As Stefan correctly said, it was built in the middle ages by the Order of the Knights of Malta, to supply water to numerous mills. Next to the channel is one of the most romantic parts of Prague - the small island of Kampa, which was created at the same time as the channel.

To add to all the trivia - the name of the channel is ÄŒertovka (Devils' Channel) and nobody really knows why. Rumor has it that it was after an evil and devilish woman who lived close by.

Over to you, Bob

Cheers,

Jan

I'll continue with the river theme, and throw in a few mountains for good measure, but no hints at present.

Michael, I love your guess. I've only been to Hokkaido once, but have always wanted to go back. I can certainly see the basis for the guess.

The reason I wanted to post this picture on this thread is that almost no one guesses the location. Most think it was shot in Alaska. But Alaska is 9 times zones away, and Hokkaido is 8 time zones away. (Hint #1.)

The location shares part of its name with a famous tourist destination (tourist trap?) just 12 km to the east along the same river (Hint #2). This river continues its way in an easterly direction. When this river crested in 1966 the engineers panicked, discharging a dam. The ensuing flood downriver (which may or may not have occurred without the discharge, no one will ever know) claimed many lives, made thousands homeless and destroyed an untold number of priceless works of art. (Hint #3.)

Where are we?

I just noticed what appeared to be a Mexican flag. But - it is not a Mexican flag, it is an Italian flag with the naval ensign, isn't it?

Are we on the river Arno with the northern Appenines in the background?

Cheers,

Jan

Yes, you are indeed correct.

View of the Apuan Alps from the south bank of the River Arno at Marina di Pisa in Tuscany. Excellent job spotting the Italian naval ensign!

Back to you Jan.

Sorry for the delay - had to wage a battle with the scanner.....

This will probably be difficult - I am looking for the name of the lake. The area suffered a major natural disater, with big loss of life - those are the first hints to help with your guesses.

Good luck,

Jan
