Evaluating a Second-hand M8

The first check, I do, when looking at a second hand M8 is, to check for a vertical line issue, as this could potentially mean a longer trip to Leica Solms for repair for a cost.

- check the rangefinder, as mentioned.

- check the USB port of the camera (is it working?)

- check the camera with your SD cards, if it works reliably after the firmware has been updated

- check if the reader of the lens data works properly (mount a coded lens, fire a few shots and inspect the EXIF data for lens information - lens name and focal length will be recorded, aperture only estimated, don't worry)

- check for signs of drops - lens mount tight?, any dings?, dents?, does the bottom plate fit easily?

- ask the dealer, to hand you a flash, or bring your own compatible unit and test the camera with a flash up to 1/180

- Check the LCD screen for a brownish shadow under the LCD cover glass, mostly appearing outside, if it appears (it is often called "coffee stain issue" - google it, to find images, how it looks).

If everything is fine, enjoy your new M8 ;-)

It is a very fine camera!

Dear Friends,

Thanks for all your valuable suggestions. The camera I went to test at the dealer, was unable to format the SD card, not sure whether it was due to an incompatible card or the camera. The dealer sent the camera to Leica for check-up. In the meantime I bought a used M8 from Robert White of UK along with a new Elmarit 28mm/f2.8 ASPH. The package arrived yesterday. Once I took the Leica in my hands (first time in life), I could imagine what Leica lovers might be feeling. Though I did not have a chance to evaluate the camera in person I depended on Robert White and their 3 months guarantee. Once I received it yesterday, carried out all the checks you suggested except the shutter count which is yet to be done, and so far the camera seems to be fully functional and physically in sound shape.

I registered the camera online at Leica and was surprised to get an offer for 2 free filters, I have applied for them and hope they will arrive soon.

Now to some real photography!

Thanks

Gautam

Thanks for all your inputs. I examined the camera today. It was fine as far as external body, viewfinder and the shutter release button. However, when I inserted my SD card, the M8 failed to format the card. The seller, who is a Leica dealer also could not format a brand new card.

He said he will upload the latest firmware and let me know if it is OK or not. I am wondering how serious can this software problem be. Should I forget about this camera even the seller should be able to correct the error through firmware update?

Probably very old firmware that cannot handle SDHC cards. As soon at it is updated ( by a standard SD card!) the problem is gone.

Since the second-hand camera I bought came from UK, it has only UK type. The alternative plug types and the cable for charging from car was not included. I will request the seller to send me these, but in case I have to find the European type plug, and the car charger cable, where is the best place to find them?

The buy-and sell of this forum? But isn't it simpler to use an adapter plug?
Yes, sure. That is how I charged it the first time. But was looking for a more elegant solution. Afterall it is a Leica!

I have sourced a very short flat EUR connector cable - it came with an external printer ballast, I think.

This is perfect for me, traveling a lot. I prefer this to the Apple connector trick, as often one has not enough space, to stick the charger into the wall socket, available.

The flat EUR connector is the best compromise as well in weight bulk and compatibility in China, Hong Kong and Europe, where I travel frequently.
