kennedda Posted April 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I received a promotion from DataColor for their Spyder LensCal which is designed to test AF operation for DSLRs. Do you think we could use this tool to check the focusing of our M rangefinder cameras? What do you think? See Home Page | Datacolor for the details. Advertisement Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Hi kennedda, Take a look here Spyder LensCal. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted April 20, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 20, 2011 Sure. It's apparently both less sophisticated and less expensive than the LensAlign, and fancier and more expensive than the Nikon D70 Focus Chart. If you've got a dSLR with the ability to set a focus adjustment, either the LensAlign or the Spyder LensCal would be quite useful. Since that's not a feature of the M, I find the D70 Focus Chart adequate. I use it only to verify a problem once I've discovered it, and then send the offending lens or body off for adjustment. Both the commercial products look good, and the LensAlign has a number of users on the forum, so there's certainly nothing wrong with trying out either. UliWer Posted April 20, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 20, 2011 You could use the LensCal for the M. Though it looks quite small I fear practical use will be a little bit cumbersome: you need two tripods, one for the LensCal, one for the camera. And the usual problems you have getting a focus chart on paper in the right angle to the lens will stay the same or become even more important as it is a lot smaller. AncientCityPhoto Posted April 21, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 21, 2011 I use a lensalign with my Leica M gear. It has proven just as accurate as with a DSLR system. The only problem is that I cannot correct the front or back focus digitally. I just send my stuff off to DAG Camera repair. So far my diagnosis with the Lens Align has been correct every time! Very useful! I recommend using a 1.4 magnifier to focus on the targets too. This ensures the most accurate focus. You will also need to make sure your camera rangefinder is aligned and to spec to get the most correct reading of lenses.
kennedda Posted April 23, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted April 23, 2011 Thank you all for the well reasoned and informed comment. I will explore LensAlign too.
