Nuked film stock?

I have a bad feeling I've got 2x125 ft of Eastman 5222 Double-X that was nuked while in transit from the US based seller to me. Souped two strips in two different developers today and both rolls come out close to completely black with very faint traces of images. Even the unexposed areas are black.

I haven't come across film fogged in transit before. Could someone with experience confirm my suspicion?

Thanks,

Carl

Hi

5222 has a cult following and (as James says) Andys site has lots of information.

But 5222 should have batch edge identification, and if fresh be low fog. Are you sure your dark room is dark?

There are suppliers in the UK.

My dark room is a changing bag and it is dark I've put 40+ rolls in it on reels since January. Had it been a light leak it is likely the effect would have been uneven and not as uniform as the strips I tested last night. I'll cut of a bit from the second roll today, to see if it shows the same. I'll just snip of a foot or so in the bag and thread it directly on a reel for souping. Not very high hopes though.

The seller is as puzzled as I am and he wants to make it right so all is not lost.

I did test the other roll just now and it is just as black as the first one. The guy I bought the rolls from claims the stock is from a divided up 1000 ft roll.

Edit: for today's test I cut about 50cm off the second roll and transferred it directly to a reel for developing, inside the changing bag. It should have come out blank except for any edge markings.

Have a look at this post (its in german, but the pic shows how a "nuked" film looks like, and further down are links to more info on how to recognize the patterns)

Your problem does not indicate that its from x-raying. Is it possible that customs opened the packaging?

Thanks guys, I'm beginning to think something other than x-rays are the cause of it. We'll see what the seller says when he has tested his remaining stock from the same 1000 ft roll. I do seem to remember it arriving in a std USPS box that didn't look like it had been opened.

I called the number listed on Kodak's page for cinematic film stock in Norway and was transferred by a Swede to a Dane in consumer support for digital cameras and picture frames in Edinburgh. None of the Kodak employees I talked to had a clue. I guess the local film industry has other sources than calling the Kodak central European switchboard.

The closest source for 5222 is in Germany, I'll call them to see what they say.

Carl - I had this problem with some re-spooled short ends once when I first started using movie stock. The consensus was it had been exposed whilst being respooled. I have never bought short ends since.

I always buy 400ft sealed cans and load on to 100ft ORWO reels and freeze them until I need to use them in my bulk loaders.

Orwa ? or kodak 5222 from germany?

I'd love get decent 400ft roll for good price. 145 euros for 400ft Orwa n47 from Filmotec is a bit steeper than I thought. Arista Premium 100ft is good price for one who want order from U.S. to Europe. I orered some rolls from Freestyle and I didnt get problem with films, hm.

Maybe they upgraded xray machines to stronger ones :D

Have you made up a jig to load the 100 foot spools from the 400 or 1000 foot cores?

Noel - Not at the moment. I only buy 400ft cans and re-spool in a large changing bag. I used to do it straight in to the cassettes whilst watching a film! Now I re-spool on to ORWO 100ft cores as I also use the ORWO N 74 plus. The cores and cans are perfect and fit the bulk loaders perfectly.

I have a box of my fathers old cine bits which includes various spools and a rewinder which I may play with once I have finished building the darkroom at the new house.
