Guest badbob Posted April 11, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 11, 2011 That's some bad flare. Can you inspect the lens with a flashlight and see if there's something inside, or if the lens coating has a problem, or even if some clear substance has gotten onto the lens but isn't easy to see in normal light? If you don't see anything wrong with a good inspection, then do some test shots indoors with a naked light bulb in the room - pointing the camera all different directions to see if you pick up any flare from the bulb, and where that flare occurs. Allnm Posted April 11, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 11, 2011 I guess it is just flare from the sun directly on the lens, either that or I am using your camera too because the flare is showing in the same place.! Heres one from Saturday taken into the sun. I mis shaded! My lens is perfect and I cant recreate the flare indoors using a light bulb Allan
Guest badbob Posted April 12, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 12, 2011 I guess it is just flare from the sun directly on the lens, either that or I am using your camera too because the flare is showing in the same place.!Heres one from Saturday taken into the sun. I mis shaded! My lens is perfect and I cant recreate the flare indoors using a light bulb Allan I don't get flare if I aim directly at a light bulb, but if I use auto settings, macro, a clear (non-frosted) bulb, and start with the camera aimed away from the bulb and slowly move the bulb or a portion of it into the corner of the frame, I can see the flare then. So I guess my question is, can you determine what shooting angles are safe and which produce the most flare? And you should be able to see that flare on the screen if you're using the screen while shooting.
tyler Posted April 13, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted April 13, 2011 thanks, guess it was the low setting sun that did it. I've ordered the tube and lens shade I've seen on other X1 cameras. Will see if it helps tv

wda Posted April 13, 2011 Share #7 Posted April 13, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Took about 50 shots, two had this... Any ideas? Were on both DNG and JPEG files. tv The sun is way off to the left and the foreground, and probably the camera, are in shadow. How can that be flare? Is my assessment is correct. tyler Posted April 17, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted April 17, 2011 In and out of tree shadows--this one was "in" a sun shaft. tv
Allnm Posted April 19, 2011 Share #9 Posted April 19, 2011 I got some more flares today taking images with the sun high in the sky. The front element is only just below the level of the lens barrel so I can expect flare when pointing towards the sun. I would be good if Leica came up with a lens hood for the camera, but I am aware that some Leica lenses have a hood which will fit on the screw thread around the X1 lens. I just make my hand into a sun shade ( when I remember), no flare! Allan
jankap Posted April 20, 2011 Share #10 Posted April 20, 2011 For my Dlux-4 (and for my DP1) I use the automatic lens shade of Enjoyyourcamera. Very comfortable! The showed examples are remarkable. It should be a flare problem. I once had something similar with the Tessina. This camera however has a mirror in its optical path. Jan Continuing a discussion of another thread. An EVF would have showed this.
NZDavid Posted April 20, 2011 Share #11 Posted April 20, 2011 Tyler, definitely flare. Or a light leak. But it's digital. Allnm, GE cow? Mad cow?

pgeobc Posted May 5, 2011 Share #13 Posted May 5, 2011 Looks like a stray ray of light on each one of those. One probably peeped through the trees, another through the window. It has gotta be, because it has to have an origin.

Allnm Posted May 15, 2011 Share #15 Posted May 15, 2011 I only get this with the sun in front, there is obviously some reflection of, or direct light across the lens. Not sure if the reflection is inside or on the front element Allan

thybo Posted May 19, 2011 Share #18 Posted May 19, 2011 My experience shows ca. 2 out of every 100 pictures with this "flare". Some of the pictures taken in the shadow. With no sun (In/direct) No such failure before updating the firmware. (2.0) Think "flares" look quite different. (i.m.o.) Can´t remake it by purpose., but easily make a pic. with flare caused by sunlight/bulps (and it looks totally different from this strange ray/plamage of violet/red/blue - all in the downright corner aiming the centre of the pic. My locale dealer meant that the sensor might have gone too hot (??) Well - speculations... Will return when I get some more information /My X1 back - Sic! JeTexas Posted May 19, 2011 Share #19 Posted May 19, 2011 The fact that they're all in the same location despite different cameras and different positions of light leads me to believe it's something failing. I was reading another thread and the guy's camera was only showing pink on the screen. I think these "flares" are the beginning of a sensor failure and it just hasn't spread across the entire sensor yet.
