cernobila Posted April 9, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) It has occurred to me that most of the photographers that I have met, seen and read about that use or used a Leica of some description are males. I wonder what is the percentage of female users of Leicas, especially today’s digital models. Ladies, what is your favourite model and why. I will start with my wife who loves the V Lux 20, she said; it is small, easy to use, has good zoom range and gives excellent results in JPEG without the need of PP. (she said this in a female version) As a result of trying this camera (it was mine in the first place) she has finally taken up photography.....Every time we leave the house she says, "don’t forget to bring my camera". So, is Leica a males domain, or are we not alone.

cernobila Posted April 9, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted April 9, 2011 My wife uses a IIIf and a Digilux 3 There are lots of women members on the forum. My wife would not touch my IIIf or any of my reflex cameras......actually, I have not touched my IIIf either except to keep the dust of it......but she has become very keen on the V Lux 20 and likes using it. I wonder if the ladies like to talk about technical issues like the men, or they just use the time to take more pictures......

adan Posted April 9, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 9, 2011 Hmm - I'd say women make up the majority of Leica photographers (as opposed to Leica hobbyists) I've run across: Susan Meiselas Mary Ellen Mark Home Page Through Weegee’s Lens - New York Times Martine Franck Then there's Flickr: Leica women and always the Grandmother of the Groom: Photographic Print of Queen Elizabeth II uses a Leica camera from PA Photos: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home Women tend to not be gear-heads, however. Wow......I should have gone on Google and done some serious research as I normally do.....I thank you for the info so far......but I must say that during my time of nine years in a photography retail store, (the biggest in a small city) and since, (over thirty years) I have not met a single female Leica photographer.....all those that I knew were males. I got to get out more often.......

ho_co Posted April 10, 2011 Share #13 Posted April 10, 2011 Don't omit these two professional photographer forum members: Eleanor Brown Tina Manley And note that the photographer referred to in Andy's NYT link Through Weegee’s Lens is Jill Freedman, not Weegee. stuny Posted April 10, 2011 Share #14 Posted April 10, 2011 Barbara is very good at suggesting photos but does not like taking photos, other than instant camera pictures of people in emerging countries to give them their pictures. Speaking of instant cameras, Fuji has filled the void left by Polaroid.

luigi bertolotti Posted April 10, 2011 Share #19 Posted April 10, 2011 Males are majority, hereby - no doubt - and Ncole (as well as the less frequent "Loloumum" and some others) are a always greatly appreciated presence.... The reason ? Many and different... in general a Leica forum attracts lot of people that have a certain passion for what is, generally speaking, "fine mechanics"... for historical - cultural reasons, a "male" field of interest (I should be curios to verify the %s in other photo brands fora... suspect higher for females), then there are two other main considerations to account for : 1) % of women with personal or professional dedication to photography 2) % of women actively partecipating to Internet groups / fora / communities etc... As for 1), my idea is that the "Leica oriented" % within is probably not too diferent, as for 2) I haven't idea about: my strictly personal situation is that me and my wife are both, someway, professionally engaged into IT, so our "cultural" attitudes to a growing home usage of the Net "at home" was similar... I partecipate to only one community (this), she partecipates to two (gardening and cuisine) but with less frequent presence. She has not any specific interest in photo equipment.... I had already reported her someway funny reaction when realized that I was starting to use a M8...: "ah, it's digital ? strange, it's like the old one..." About HM Elizabeth II : with due respect, I see hers as a typical case of "noblesse oblige"
