Lightwrangler Posted March 29, 2011 Share #561  Posted March 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Use a sim card reader and download the file directly into the card, and not on the "desktop".  Does that really work? Can the camera unzip the file? Just curious…  Mike

eelekim Posted March 29, 2011 Share #563 Â Posted March 29, 2011 MF is vastly improved. But I wonder how many of us prefer MF than AF, especially when AF is a bit better now... I think I use MF only when AF can't be locked on my target. Â Regarding JPG IQ, I forgot to take some shots to compare. Now I don't think I can go back to 1.0. Ecaton Posted March 29, 2011 Share #564  Posted March 29, 2011 Does that really work? Can the camera unzip the file? Just curious… Mike  Once the zip file is on the top level of the card click on it and it gets unzipped. Don't know whether the camera could do it. diogenis Posted March 29, 2011 Share #565 Â Posted March 29, 2011 Guys, follow the instructions step by step as they are recommended by Leica, download the 44kb pdf file. It is a firmware update, do it responsibly...
sungnee Posted March 29, 2011 Share #566 Â Posted March 29, 2011 As a benchmark, I've previously had a D700, 1D Mark III, and currently have a 5D Mark II with the 85L f/1.2. I prefer quality over convenience, but not to the detriment of 'speed' - i.e. being able to use something that functions in such a way as to enable me to be able to take images of things that may not be stationary. Â I assume you took up photography during the digital age, if that's the case the X1 is not for you. There'll be no end of aggravation. Try the X100. Just wait for the teething problems to be sorted out. Â On the other hand, if you came from film, especially if you've had range finder experience, then I would say the X1, BUT, I don't know if the X100 uses the super CCD. If it does, then the assumption must be that the dynamic range of the X100 is larger than the X1. It may be worth getting the X100 just for its dynamic range, and then only use it for scenes that you need larger dynamic range. Â Sometimes the company told you long before they issue the product. The styling of the X100 is so excellent that one must assume that it has no other selling point. Why else spend so much money on styling?

jafleming3 Posted March 29, 2011 Share #568  Posted March 29, 2011 Thank you, Edward and others. My Mac did decompress the file and I installed V2 - took less than a minute! Dumb of me!  cheers,  john  BTW, the little I've seen - a very fine upgrade indeed!
LinkerX Posted March 29, 2011 Share #569 Â Posted March 29, 2011 Is anyone planning on doing a video review of the improvements? I would like to see what they are. I might just have to buy another X1.

Ecaton Posted March 29, 2011 Share #571  Posted March 29, 2011 I've been to'ing and fro'ing between the X1 and my X100 preorder for weeks now, and was waiting to see what any potential fw upgrade brought to the X1. It's difficult to make a call without having used them both, which is a problem wrt the X100 of course as virtually no shops will have any, let alone a demo one. I'm still torn - I think it mainly comes down to price, as the X1 + VF + grip is a fair whack. As someone who does not want to manual focus (I say this because I'd be unlikely to use it), but who values image quality, and if you didn't have either camera, which would you choose? For example, if you were expecting a newborn, would the X1 give you any cause for concern in being able to take the images you'd like to be able to take? I'm looking for balanced opinions, this is not an attack on any particular make or model. Although, many X100 images I see look a bit, well, washed out - not sure if it's processing. Also, it seems that all the initial run have a wonky OVF issue which requires the camera to be sent back to Fuji for repair (although some folk with it are clearly trying to ignore the issue). I'm not enormously impressed I have to say.  As a benchmark, I've previously had a D700, 1D Mark III, and currently have a 5D Mark II with the 85L f/1.2. I prefer quality over convenience, but not to the detriment of 'speed' - i.e. being able to use something that functions in such a way as to enable me to be able to take images of things that may not be stationary.  If you are a AF only shooter, neither of these two camera's will be fast enough. For babies, toddlers, puppies, really fast AF or zone focusing is better suited. After FW upgrade, ZF works now like a charm with the X1. Don't know about the X100. Â What are you clicking on? Does the file end with .zip or with .upd? In case you can't see the files suffix, do a command-i on the file and have a look in the info-window. Â My suspicion is your mac automatically unzipped the file and now you are trying to doubleclick on the .upd file which can't be opened by the mac. It's the file you have to copy to your X1s storage card. Â Mike
bazdi Posted March 29, 2011 Share #573  Posted March 29, 2011 hey!  1. format your sd card with the x1 2. put the *.upd-file on the sd-card 3. turn the x1 off an disconnect it from your mac 4. turn your x1 on with the main switch and press the INFO-button at the same time 5. now the x1 will update itself  cheers

After I download the firmware and click onto it, I get the message 'cant open as there is no available application to open it' Can anyone please advise me how I should proceed?  Thanks  dunk  Hi dunk,  take a look at the finder in your Mac.  1. Is the downloaded file (in the downloads-folder) still ending with .zip? Then you have to unzip it. Do you use the Mac App Store? Search for ZIP in the store. There are many tools like the stuffit expander, which handle zip-files and more.  2. If it´s already named X1-V20.upd - there´s nothing to open. This file should be copied to the x1-card in the finder.  I hope, that helps...   matte

Worked totally fine. good high ISO, very quiet, precise AF, good skin tones. babies dont move fast so the af-speed is no problem.
Douglasco Posted March 29, 2011 Share #577 Â Posted March 29, 2011 Firmware update installed with no probs, autofocus is better and jpgs look better in camera i have not yet put images on my comp to check them out. pharyngula Posted March 29, 2011 Share #580 Â Posted March 29, 2011 I've just downloaded the update - no problems - and had a chance to fiddle with manual focus and take a few jpg shots. I tended to stay away from the frustrating manual focus of FW1 but I can already tell that I'll be using the MF setting frequently from this point forward! The whole experience with MF on the X1 is now different, from the feel and responsiveness of the wheel, to the distance scale, DOF slider and the delete/focus button lock. I'll reserve final judgment on enthusiasm level until I've used it for a couple of days but I'm enthusiastic about what I see so far. Â Just one question though - I'm not sure I get the distinction (if any) between using the delete/focus button to lock a focus point vs. shutting the camera off and on to retain the current MF setting?
