phancj Posted February 11, 2011 Share #281 Â Posted February 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nope JS. It was immediately obvious to me. Not so much the noise but the heavy feel of the shutter in the M8. Unless you are saying the ones I tried were all broken. I cannot describe it, but I felt it in the nex5 too but in the M8 it was more pronounced. The sound of the Nikon is louder(sorry, think from rereading my own post I didnt quite spell it out clearly), but the tactile feel of the M8 felt heavier, a sort of "clunk" in the shutter. DSLRs though loud do not generate so much vibration in the shutter. I cannot describe it exactly, but I know it was a distinct "thud" like something fell inside. Not nice IMO. The M9 has no such feeling to my hands. Â CJ

patrick parker Posted February 11, 2011 Share #282 Â Posted February 11, 2011 leica vs fuji? my first dissapointment was the R8 when leica first decided to put form before function. then came the panasonic replicas. i'm glad leica survived because i like the idea of a good digital rangefinder but now that contax is long gone, we are left with fuji and ricoh to come up with smart ways. i'm also glad that the oscar barnack spirit still exists somewhere in the world . Â the fact that they are a small company should be their biggest strength and when it comes to function before form .why go and spend even a minute on a titanium model cool looking leica while producing a pocket camera with bad focusing functions, and loose parts. yes it produces very good quality images. any two thousand dollar camera does. call ricoh call fuji ask for help. those lenses deserve better. ezc203 Posted February 11, 2011 Share #283 Â Posted February 11, 2011 CJ - Â While I usually agree with you, I'm not sure I can here. Although this may be a subjective "feeling", I still cannot see how any DSLR has a shutter that creates less vibration than the M8. I have both the 5D mark II and the 7D (and have fondled thoroughly with my friends Nikon D700). And while the 7D and D700 have substantially less shutter vibration (the 5Dii is actually ridiculous), I don't feel that it is substantially more or less than the M8. ezc203 Posted February 11, 2011 Share #284 Â Posted February 11, 2011 Patrick - Â Wow really? Â I don't know why recently I have been disagreeing so much with posts on this forum, maybe its that time of month again but really? Â I would hardly call the R8 "form over function". In my opinion (as well as those shared by a great number of members on this forum) the R8 is actually a step back from the classic R3-R7 look and a big step forward in SLR technology. It's awkward rock shape makes it easier to hold and more enjoyable to use. Â As for the "panasonic replicas", it is the unfortunate but necessary by-product of business collaboration. Leica brings camera technology and optical science to the table, while Panasonic bring electronic science, Japanese ability to pack everything in a small product, and large scale manufacturing to create modern products that help Leica survive as a company. And some of the joint-production cameras have been recognized as the top of their class. Including the DLUX4 (LX3), DLUX5 (LX5) and a series of other Lumix cameras that are exceptional. Â The production of a Titanium model, which you seem to disagree with, is like a car company producing concept models. 1) it is to show off a little bit as to how "cool" you can make something but 2) and more importantly, it is a way to experiment with new technology. In the case of the M9Ti, it is the side finger strap (which I really like) and the new frame-line illumination (another feature that intrigues me). Â As for calling the X1 "a pocket camera with bad focusing functions, and loose parts" and saying "yes it produces very good quality images. any two thousand dollar camera does." is severely simplifying the situation. I agree with you on quality control, I think it is absolutely ridiculous that a $2000 camera would have loose nobs and peeling skin; but you seem to have positioned the X1 is an inappropriate segment of the market to compare it. The Leica X1 is not merely a "pocket camera"; for that Leica has the DLUX5 and VLUX20. It's hard to pin-point what exactly the X1 is, but for a camera of that size to produce that kind of image quality is very impressive. Not a lot of "pocket cameras" can. The less vibration you feel in the DSLR could be from the weight of the unit and the fact that your hand is farther away from the shutter mechanism due to the size of the camera. I find it funny that you say the M9 doesn't have this though... you are very sensitive to shutters.

You could be right about the heavier weight and distance from shutter of the DSLR mitigating the vibration, didnt think of that. But the M8/9 is by no means light either. The M9 to my hands have a less clunky shutter. It was noticeable so maybe I have sensitive hands. Not that I wont be able to take photos with it or hold it steady but the M8 shutter was annoying to me. Or maybe the shutter had too many actuations, I dunno really.  His opinion is just as valid as your 'many same line of posts' CJ  I agree I have similar line of posts...but when you say you're not looking back when posting you're looking back. carlosecpf Posted February 12, 2011 Share #288  Posted February 12, 2011 Carlos, For crying out loud revisiting this forum with many same line of posts to match would not constitute looking back??!!  In all honesty, you made me think!  I guess the frustration made me repetitive... I am sorry for that. But I believe enjoyment would make me as repetitive, like many other X1 fans, raving about the camera every time they can.  Perhaps I am becoming the party pooper now. Not nice...  Time to take a break and shoot for a while over the weekend.

Ivan Muller Posted February 13, 2011 Share #290 Â Posted February 13, 2011 I have to agree with CJ, first time I picked up an m9 i was surprised at how heavy it felt and how loud the shutter sounded! I know there is a silent mode but the shop assistant couldn't find it in the menu! Maybe the X1 has made us spoiled brats.....
magnolio Posted February 13, 2011 Share #291 Â Posted February 13, 2011 Edward - I did, and you know how much I love that camera. Love the images, love the large prints I can make with it. But AF killed it for me. It just took too much extra effort to make it work for me. I realize I had to change my photography style too much, and that was a compromise I wasn't willing to make. The M8 was a better fit. Larger though, but sigh. Compromises, compromises. Understandable Eddie. Hope you get another one.....some day. Guest stnami Posted February 14, 2011 Share #297 Â Posted February 14, 2011 It would be great if the X1 evolves, lets hope it doesn't go the way of the Digilux 2 once RD finances got directed elsewhere that was the dead end. Â I like the 45mm at 90 it works fine as a portrait lens, not too bad out in the streets though a tad slow for the fast and furious stuff. But that is about a " son-canikon" brick which for most people is the best way to go. To pre focus the 45 is your only other real option though at 90mm it has to be f4-5.6 to nail shots consistently, this sort of negates the purpose of 2.8. It all suits me a 20 and a 45 be it 40 and 90 Â I intend to give it a real workout next month too much teaching on my plate................
