carlosecpf Posted February 1, 2011 Share #201 Â Posted February 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I got tired of waiting the firmware update and sold the camera past sunday... Â It was not an easy decision. I really tried to like this camera a lot... by the end, I realized that I bonded with the camera's stunning look and great IQ, but it's operation slowness and pre-historic AF really made me want to throw the camera out of the window sometimes... However, before doing that, I decided to wait for the highly anticipated FW update. In my mind, 12 months should be more than enough time to get something like that released to the public. Leica had more than that and gave us nothing. After almost 17 months from the camera release date, we got nothing. This is almost disrespectful in my opinion. Â I got a GF-1 with the 20mm f/1.7 two months ago and I am loving it. Never missed a picture because of AF slowness. ISO 3200 performance is pretty poor as compared to the X1 but, hey, who needs that when you have a F/1.7 lens? So, all in all, it was a great buy for my needs. With the extra money, I bought some great M glass. Â I am looking forward to reading the reports on the X1 performance after the FW upgrade, and truly hope that it makes the X1 the camera many of us hoped for in 09/09/2009. Advertisement Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Hi carlosecpf, Take a look here X1 Firmware v2 Upgrade [Merged thread]. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
h00ligan Posted February 1, 2011 Share #202  Posted February 1, 2011 I'm right there with you, I just dusted off my gf1 and will be shooting with it for a week.  I agree, the iso benefit is offset by the faster lens.. the focal range is similar.  Dynamic range is not as good  It's way faster  It may be sharper  DOF from mft at 1.7 is virtually Identically to aspc @2.8  I'll post back, but I'm very close to putting it up for sale, it's a lot of money to have tied up in a cam I'm not totally happy with.. maybe Leica will surprise me in the next few days. Koizumi13 Posted February 1, 2011 Share #203 Â Posted February 1, 2011 I'm waiting this one out but Leica really has been taking a long time to release v.2 firmware. I've been very disappointed in general with several Leica digital products. I've had 2 D-Lux camera shutters fail, 2! In any event, hopefully the X1 firmware will rectify the focus issues. jtori Posted February 2, 2011 Share #204 Â Posted February 2, 2011 It's Groundhog Day in the U.S. I'm guessing it will be six more weeks (optimistically) until firmware ver. 2.0 Â Joe.
Ecaton Posted February 2, 2011 Share #205 Â Posted February 2, 2011 On Steve Huff's webpage I read somewhere March. I guess he meant 2011, but who knows, it's Leica after all:rolleyes:
jsrockit Posted February 2, 2011 Share #206 Â Posted February 2, 2011 I got tired of waiting the firmware update and sold the camera past sunday... Â Hmmmm, liking your M8 that much huh? Nothing wrong with the GF1 for sure. I just bought a G2 so my girlfriend will go out photographing with me. It was either that or a DSLR for her, and I hate DSLRs, so G2 it was. Not a bad camera though I like the GF1 better. Â In all fairness Carlos, the first shipment of Leica X1s were sent about a year ago.
JanCderidder Posted February 2, 2011 Share #207 Â Posted February 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Before I bought my X1 I did research on the product, tried it in the shop and was totally aware of what I was getting into. Taking the investment into account it seemed like a wise thing to do, the research and stuff. Seems like lots of users are using the slow auto-focus etc. as an excuse, a self justification to just go out and by the next best and newest toy on the market. As for firmware update.... the camera is barely a year old. Most of these abondeners and purchasers of the X100, 4/3 will be complaining about this that or the other after they have been using it for over 8 months and Nikon/Canon/Pentax or whomever introduces something new, again as a self justification, nothing more nothing less. Upon buying the X1 you could of known what you were getting into pretty easily, but I guess it's hard to admit to yourself and others that you're just a gadget freak always wanting the newest of the newest despite it's known shortcomings, after all give it six months and I'm confident you will have something to complain about again
jsrockit Posted February 2, 2011 Share #208 Â Posted February 2, 2011 What makes you think people have a problem with being a gadget freak or need any justification to spend their own money the way they want to? I'll admit it... I use multiple cameras and probably always will. I don't see any issue with that. However, what is wrong with wanting to the X1 to be better if Leica can do it? If it doesn't get better in the AF speed department, I'll still use it. That said, I'm all for improvements. I think the issue comes from someone (not Leica) letting the cat out of the bag too early regarding the existense of the FW update... which made people hungry for it. Douglasco Posted February 2, 2011 Share #209 Â Posted February 2, 2011 JanCderidder while I agree with most of what you say, some of us brought the camera when it was first launched and could not do much research, we could only go by what was stated on the original brouchure when the camera was first announced. The words were something like quick responsive autofocus. I have the copy on my other computer and I can not remember the exact words as i write this. When the camera arrived I did not expect it to be slower than my old Digilux 2 which it clearly is. I have now got used to it and work around the problem, But I can understand those that are frustrated by the lack of firmware update myself included. how many other brands of camera have been launched after the X1 and had firmware updated within a couple of months. If Leica were to say the updated firmware will be available in April or something then a lot of folks will be o.k with that. But you are correct when you say a lot of users just want the latest new camera thats available. That is down to a lot of camera reviewers claiming this camera is better than that one. I do not fall for such rubbish but I wish someone would do it for the tyre trade as I would make a lot more money than I do now.
earful Posted February 2, 2011 Share #210  Posted February 2, 2011 could it be that the reason for the delay in getting the update out is that all hands were called on deck to count the profits this year? see the report below, which was posted in a dpreview thread  http://www.leica-corporate.com/...file/download.php?filename=cp_file_5391.pdf   that being said, the number of used x1s appearing of ebay seems to be increasing bit by bit. Allnm Posted February 2, 2011 Share #211 Â Posted February 2, 2011 the number of used x1s appearing of ebay seems to be increasing bit by bit. Â I dont think this is anything new in the camera world. There seem to be many people who buy cameras on a whim then sell again within a very short time, blaming one thing and another to justify their reasons for selling. Great for us looking for a bargain! Â JanCderidder's guidelines for buying were the same as my own. I cant afford to spend that much on a camera unless I know exactly what I m getting into. I probably did more research though as we dont have any Leica dealers nearby so the first time I held an X1 was when it came out of its box here. Its even better than I thought it would be and makes me smile everytime I use it ( and I use it all the time) Â Even though the camera has been out for over a year, here in the UK, we dont see too many X1's on Ebay and even fewer for sale in camera shops. Most on Ebay are from the USA or Canada or Hong Kong. But those that do appear seem to hold their prices pretty well, but bear in mind that a used X1 will likely not have the free Lightroom download, full warranty or Passport benefits, and these "bargains" then dont look too good. Â Its also nice to see Leica making decent profits. It means they can invest in the company and keep producing great cameras. Â Allan
earful Posted February 2, 2011 Share #212 Â Posted February 2, 2011 i forgot to add that those ebay x1s are priced shockingly close to brand new ones. can't understand why anyone would choose not to have a 2-year warranty just to save $200 or so. on the other hand, i have to admit that i too read about the x1's quirks before leaping - and chose to try the x1 by purchasing a less expensive refurb from popflash with a one year warranty. no need for lr, as i already own it, popflash has an excellent reputation, and i felt that in some ways a refurb might be more likely to have a lot of quirks addressed. truth to tell, i'm pretty happy with my x1 except for "the af issue" - and i do believe that will be addressed. like everyone else who finds this an issue, however, i'm all for addressing it sooner rather than later. in the meantime, no reason to put the x1 in storage. i just use it in rotation with my dslr. grober Posted February 2, 2011 Share #213 Â Posted February 2, 2011 My X1 is on the shelf 'til new firmware is released, installed and proves to speed up this dreadfully slow camera. Absent improvement, my X1 will be sold and my 40+ year journey with the brand will be finis. Â -g

Ecaton Posted February 3, 2011 Share #215 Â Posted February 3, 2011 Criticizing Leica products and expecting them to catch up with much lower priced competitors' products and customer support (FW update) is no sacrilege. The longer this thread lasts, the clearer an interesting pattern starts to emerge: Among the Leica defenders are a few X1 owners only. Requests for AF improvement via FW upgrade are from actual X1 users, many of them early adopters.
patrick parker Posted February 3, 2011 Share #216 Â Posted February 3, 2011 They are working on the jogging ( wheel ) problem still. so i doubt it will come out this feb.
Stefan K Posted February 3, 2011 Share #217 Â Posted February 3, 2011 Patrick, what is the jogging wheel problem? (I tried a brief search). Â A very nice man at Leica (their compact camera product manager I believe) told me that they plan to finalise the FW update in the first half of March at the latest (and a little before that if things go well) so I'm hopeful that we'll see the FW within the next few weeks. I'm only using the X1 until they make good on this 70 year old error. Â I even go a step further: every morning I stare with a very angry expression at my x1 and treat her with scorn and will not stop doing this until the firmware is released. I'm sure this will speed up the release
Backpage Posted February 3, 2011 Share #219 Â Posted February 3, 2011 I don't get all the hooha. Â For me taking pictures with an X1 is no slower than taking pics with a M camera. It takes a second or more to focus a rangefinder. And if you know what you're doing, you can use the X1 manual focus which is similar to setting hyperfocus on a film camera. That's how Frank and Cartier-Bresson somehow managed to squeek by with their tired, old, non-zoom, non-automatic cameras. Â I wonder how many X1 users come from that rangefinder/film world? Â I will say it again. If you are an early adopter you have to pay the price. If you don't have the stomach to, don't be the first to buy something brand new.
