phancj Posted January 22, 2011 Share #181 Â Posted January 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree, David has been kind to send me dlux5 vx lx5 shots as I am getting either for my wife. Seems the jpegs of the dlux5 is less sharpened, colors are better. Lens and sensor the same. Prelim tests only so nothing scientific, but before I buy either I will do a test in exact circumstances and settings and that may be revealing. Â So it will point to image processing in this case. phancj Posted January 22, 2011 Share #182 Â Posted January 22, 2011 CJ, Â I don't think they'd make that mistake.. imo it is likely to be a nex competitor. Â Edward, Â if I am not mistaken I read somewhere the sensor will be smaller... Â CJ
Guest badbob Posted January 25, 2011 Share #183 Â Posted January 25, 2011 I remember examining a lot of images from the M8 when it was first available for the review people. I noticed a certain quality that I judged to be a lack of sharpness at first. Then after experiments with sharpening some of those, I came to the conclusion that somehow the data that the M8 was writing was just less "ragged" (for lack of a better term) than most of the competition. After using the X1 for nearly a year, I see the same qualities in its images. Occasionally I get a very good image with the X1 in strong light that's better than what I could get with a Pana G1 or similar camera, but that doesn't happen that often. On the other end of the scale though, in bad lighting, the X1 pays for itself several times over.

h00ligan Posted January 25, 2011 Share #186 Â Posted January 25, 2011 Bob, agree here and have the same experience. Providing bw is shot in the high iso. On a trip now and comparing x1 to dslr... Wouldn't want to be without either but the x1 was too slow (without tripod) to capture a few scenes indoors unless I wanted to go to 3200. Handily I had a 1.4 lens that could do it. Â Also the high iso has a much diff look than typical noise, no idea why.

h00ligan Posted January 25, 2011 Share #188 Â Posted January 25, 2011 Which other cams, out of curiosity? Maybe the sensor engineers have been trying to process higher iso to look more like film or maybe it's an incidental byproduct of other areas of focus. Â I'll be interested to see my shots from flagstaff, grand canyon, and Sedona when I get home tonight. I brought the 7d because I lacked faith, so this trip (being one of landscape or still captures is going to really dictate whether I keep the x1. Lost. Posted January 31, 2011 Author Share #193 Â Posted January 31, 2011 I've have been traveling extensively in the last few months with the X1, and am really ready for this update that I sampled at Leica class... Â With many images taken, I'm content with the X1 as my main travel camera and have found what works for me in various situations, but I've missed many of shots waiting for it to autofocus, me to manual focus, or just have too many out of focus images to be completely happy. Â What sucks is, I KNOW how much better the v2.0 was with the focus and wished they would have just released it back then, giving us all what we want, then continued to work on other improvements, we should have been on 2.0 months ago, and now waiting on 3.0 and the other improvements. It's like they're wanting to perfect all the issues before releasing it, when they should release any improvements as the code is written and then tested. The focusing improvements could have been released months ago....

magnolio Posted January 31, 2011 Share #195 Â Posted January 31, 2011 Where the hell is this firmware? Seeing your pics I can't wait for buying the X1. Only one question: Isn't this little marvel more at ease with STEADY subjects (landscapes, flowers, etc) Only my question. Tks for your marvelous shots magnolio (still on the edge.....) Koizumi13 Posted January 31, 2011 Share #196 Â Posted January 31, 2011 I'm looking forward to V.2 bigtime. The slow focus of V.1 is ridiculous. The only reason why I still have the X1 is because it's so slow that it forces me to plan ahead before every shot. Yes I have been shooting pics for 25+ years, but this slow camera has forced me to rearrange my 'ways'. After owning the X1 since April '10, I am now fully accustomed with operating the camera. I simply welcome a faster focus program so that I don't miss so many damn shots due to slow focus. Â The quirkiness of the X1 reminds me of various Medium Format systems I have owned/used over the years. All MF cameras have unique quirks unto themselves. Most of these subtle, frustrating quirks cannot be explained without actual experiential/empirical experience of said MF system and/or camera. The X1 fits the same bill. It's an overpriced yet beautiful technological anachronism that is capable of taking extraordinary photos.

robert blu Posted February 1, 2011 Share #199 Â Posted February 1, 2011 I think (maybe I'm wrong, but usually not:D ) that at Leica they are not so masochist to delay the V.2 firmware just to make us desiring it. I'm afraid that the problems to solve to make the autofocus and the manual focus more usable are bigger than what we think and not easy to be solved. Just my thinking...hopefully in a few weeks (but what does few means ?) robert PS: I still like my x1...
