Expense of some IQ?

JS,

Pardon the bad English. To me the X1 images as compared to GXR look better in terms of color, and shadow details in DNG are more robust and pliable for post. Of course IQ is very personal and subjective so you may feel differently.

I like the module principle of thr GXR though, and hope leica considers this an option for the X2 so we can choose different lenses and make it a system camera. That is, if they can still keep the camera as small.

I have been reading the thread with some interest because I have just ordered an X1 ( should arrive tomorrow)

All the reviews and videos of the X1 that I have seen claim the AF is slow, but none make too much of an issue of it. I know it wont be perfect ( nothing really is) and am prepared to accept it as it is. I have a Nikon Coolpix P7000 that had awful A/F till the firmware fix almost sorted it, so I wont worry too much about my X1.

Anyway, just wanted to say Hello in here, its my first post and I have 1 sleep left before the camera arrives. I sold my GF1 to get the X1, I am sure it will be well worth it.

And just to keep on topic, I am looking forward to the release of firmware 2 as well!

I don't know... they both seem great to me. I don't pixel peep though... and perhaps I haven't used the Ricoh extensively enough. When did you own the Ricoh?

JS,

I do not own the ricoh. I do not really pixel peep either, though I do compare images. I do not know whether if it is the lens of the X1 or the image processing but the colors look better to me, and the tonality too. I also have a circle of friends and colleagues who all like photography and buy a diverse range of cameras, not to mention I am at a mall where there are plenty of cameras to try when not too busy.:D Hence I am lucky in this respect since I do hear a lot from camera sales reps whom are willing to share info honestly.

I have tried most of these cameras after I bought the X1 coz I think it would be great owning these cameras and making a "System" out of it, meaning I can bring 2 bodies at one time. The nex was the closest, but let down by the comparatively poorer E-mount lenses.

I do think the GXR's interchangeable module is cool and very good, and seriously think leica should take this idea for the X2.

All I'm trying to say CJ is that both have great IQ. The X1 does have more natural colors I guess, but both are still great. You know I love the X1. However, the Ricoh is right up there with it. At some point, we are speaking of very incremental differences.

The NEX is cool too, but I don't like the user interface or kit lenses.

my cynical side says that the firmware won't be released into the wild before the x100's feature set is "known" as opposed to "evolving" as it is now.

Which would be asinine. The X1 is a niche camera if I've ever seen one in the US. It isn't readily available in many stores. The Fuji, supposedly, will be much more of a mainstream camera. I doubt Leica even considers the Fuji competition. If one wants a Leica, only a Leica will do... as silly as that seems. Leica knows this.

agreed! but my thinking is not for leica to take features etc from the x100 but rather to keep fuji from taking features from the x1

Welcome to the forum, Allan. Despite the few detractors on the forum, I am sure you will be pleased with your new X1 because you have done your research and clearly know what to expect. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Thanks David

Camera came this morning and it was as good as I expected. Sure the AF is a little slow sometimes, but I am 55 and drive a 15 year old Land Rover, I am used to slow but I dont think its a real problem for me!

Just getting my head around processing raw files with my free LR, but I have to say the jpegs seem really nice to me too so I'm not going to rush too much.

As for the slow switch off, by the time I have turned the camera off and reached into my pocket for the cap, the lens has closed.

So far I am really impressed with this little Leica, I found myself getting into positions to take shots that I havent got into for years. This is definately a keeper.

I agree JS, the difference is not that great really, but its there and comparing images it starts to bother me, its the same with the X1 vs M9 images....by comparison one looks noticeably worse.

I do not hate the GR or the nex either, I wont be buying them based on current models but if they shrink the GXR and they beef up the AF E-mounts for the nex I will be every interested to add them to my arsenal. I actually love the GXR concept coz the sensor is paired to each lens hence optimizing the IQ and removing aberrations is easy since they can alter hardware design to perfectly match the lens instead of allowing interchangeable lenses on a single sensor where compromises must be made.

Thanks David

My impression from this impressively long thread is that there exists a very strong pent-up desire for new firmware to miraculously cure the limitations of the X1. But, for all the contemptuous talk about "nonsense", software cannot address hardware limitations, only the mess-ups that are its own fault.

The X1 is just an ordinary point-and-shoot camera, albeit with a larger sensor and dressed up to look retro. Lots of people seem to have hoped that it would be something more. I found very soon that it was so badly thought out that I decided to leave it alone. If I can't use a real camera, my mobile will do.

Here I go adding no real information of any actual value to the firmware update speculation. So. I was at Samy's Camera in LA yesterday.

I spoke with their Leica buyer who knew nothing, but while I stood there he called his distributor. Very nice of him. They said, they've heard rumors but knew nothing about a firmware update. (Not when, but nothing...Yikes!)

Then the buyer guy enganged them in a conversation about the recent S2 update. As I listened to this, I started to wonder why I ever gave up film and does my mother still have my Kodak Brownie in her basement.

Finally, as he hung up the phone, the Samy's guy said to me ...wait for it....wait for it...maybe March.

BTW, I bought a nifty wide angle zoom for my Canon 5D. Tra la...

This firmware update is starting to show resemblances to the search for El Dorado. It's always around the next turn in the river... Perhaps, like El Dorado was invented by the Natives, it's just a legend invented by Leica to palliate the problem.

when i was in florida in early december i visited Dale Photo- (i highly recommend them) the sales clerk- (a) volunteered that there would be an update and (B) she was told it was going to "ship" "this month"- this was the 1st week of December 2010.

something must have happened....

I believe you are incorrect on both of your assertions.... this is not an ordinary P&S the IQ alone proves that point . In my opinion the pent-up desire is not to "cure the limitations" but to extend the usability of an extremely capable but simple camera. Do not make the mistake of confusing simplicity with limitations... the X1 allows at least me - if not most- to concentrate on making the image rather than drilling thru menu's etc

With all the X1 purchasers proclaiming that they are happy with the camera and that it doesn't need any firmware upgrade, why is the thread 8 pages long?

I stated in the very beginning that slow AF and shutter lag make a serious tool nearly unusable. My early experience with the Olympus PEN EP-1 convinced me that after one misses a certain number of shots due to the camera's lack of responsiveness you start forgetting to bring that camera along or soon put it up for sale. Fortunately for OLY & Ricoh they have improved performance to acceptable levels but those requirements continue to rise as better equipment becomes available. Soon, the limitations of older technology relegate them to the dust bins of history. Whether Leica can improve the X1 performance enough to buy more time until the X2 remains to be seen; however, after a year of development time from release without new firmware would seem to indicate that it is not an easy thing to do.
