X1 Firmware v2 Upgrade [Merged thread]

I think the reason we have no firmware update yet is because Leica have to get it right. I believe the reputation of this camera rests on this update, they have to speed up the focusing and improve the shutter lag for a start. I am disappointed we have no firmware update. all of the cameras that have been released at the same time or after the x1 seem to have had firmware improvements. So why not the X1

as u may or may not remember all the other cameras introduced on 9/9/9 were actually on the street in mass numbers way before the x1...the x1 didn't start hitting the stores until march...

all the other cameras introduced on 9/9/9 have about 3 months headstart on the x1

As you commented "the reputation of this camera rests on this update".... i am sure they don't want to release 2.0 only to release 2.0.1 in a month

Maybe Leica should have waited a bit longer before announcing the camera, It would have given them more time to sort the isssues out. I was lucky enough to have one of the first ones and it seems a long time to wait to get an update.

I got mine in early Feb and have taken some of my best shots with it...so I am not complaining. I am prepared to accept it as it is even without an update coz there's no real contender in this niche. I think leica did the right thing to simply avoid the mass market where it cannot possibly compete.

Looking at alternatives, the sigma files are too small, the nex didnt do it for me, neither the gxr, the fuji is too big for me...I almost thought the upcoming oly compact with zuiko will do it but found out it had a tiny sensor..ah well....the X1 is fine as it is!

If a better alternative comes round then I'll get that. Meanwhile I am still having fun with the camera. Small and takes great pictures. Reminiscent of the tiny point and shoot my dad bought me when I was like 5.

I still like it quite a lot, and thats a big deal since I tire quickly of gadgets. Funnier is the fact that almost a year later the same X1 bashers are just as enthusiastic!

If I didn't know any better, I would think the firmware update is a myth. Leica is notoriously slow for FW updates though no?

i think it's probably just a case of getting everything tweaked, tested and perfected before release, first time and without the need for subsequent bug fixes. as quirky as it may seem, i think they work resolutely to their own schedules and whilst it may not exactly replicate japanese efficiency they do apparently listen. i'm not too bothered, i'd rather that it was right, besides, everything in europe seems to halt for christmas, new year and snow..

Yes, after all this time I've found a solid new firmware update request:

When the battery gets low, when you're almost out of juice, the screen will no longer turn off because you have a viewfinder attached! This exacerbates the problem of being low on battery. Please o please fix this Leica. Have the green "on" light flicker or something.

Yes, it's true. There's a beta version of the new firmware out.

I took the Leica X1 Workshop in San Francisco last weekend where the Leica rep had and X1 with the 2.0 software on it.

I was able to play with it for a few minutes and drill the Rep about what was coming, along with some suggestions.

The biggest improvement is the auto focus. I did about 20 test shots with my X1 in one hand and his v2.0 in the other. The v2.0 eight times out of ten focused almost two times as fast as v1.0.

A great improvement no doubt.

In v2.0 the manual focus is also improved, they increased the size of the focus scale or bar in the display to nearly fill the display along the bottom, and it now shows the size of the DOF by making the solid green bar that moves change in size with the aperture.

Anyways, the whole manual focus software seemed to just work easier.

They did not make the lens retract immediately upon power down.

No PNG only option. Though when asked I was answered with a suggestion that the camera needed the JPG for the review/preview and it was not likely change. "but I'm not an engineer"....

I was explained that this was just a Beta test and all changes were not implemented yet....

I was told we should see v2.0 in 6-8 weeks.

If they just would have the lens retract immediately, added with the nice focus improvements I'll be content with v2.0 as I'm quite happy with this camera and the images it produces already.

Of course in this darkly lit room in a quick moment I didn't capture this image sharply and didn't get a second chance.... maybe with v2.0 I would have captured the shot. ;)

What a good news in the beginning of a new year. I've been thinking a lot (as many of you) but I think Im going to sell my GF1 to get the little X1 beast.

CJ, not to derail.. I had the 11" and I didn't find it fast enough for Lightroom/photoshop for more than organization.. it was frustrating.. - and resold after a day. OTOH, I borrowed a 13" fully loaded and found it fit a photography workflow much better due to the built in cf reader, faster bus speed, faster processor. The price and weight difference are minimal.. however if traveling coach the smaller model may become a better option. 13" has a much better battery life as well.

Just a thought from an IT guy.

Did you have the 2GB ram or 4GB ram 11inch? Do you use the 13inch now?

Mario,

I am using the 11 inch MBA ram 4GB and processor upgraded 1.6, works well with PS and LR absolutely no probs. I have already used several versions of the MBP 13 inch, I gravitate towards the most portable models coz I find them more than usable.

In fact, you will find the MBA 11 to be really fast (must be the use of SSDs) compared to the MBP. Eveyrthing seems zippy.

Hmmm, Edward, honestly I have toyed with the X1 enough to stop using auto exposure. I use only manual settings for iso, aperture and ss and I find results totally consistent. Think I have developed heightened awareness of how the X1 exposes and I find my images improved tremendously as a result. I have now a formula in the mind every time I look at the scene. This is not bragging just happiness at the very predictable behavior of this camera.

I hear you but it is technically possible and so IMHO it should be added.

Btw my very initial tests show my x1 repair indeed made quite a difference in sharpness however I have been quite ill and will have to test further.

The thumbs up is a keeper for my big hands though! Vf, I'm still on the fence although it is very high quality glass. Much better than the useless Helios garbage.

Hey Edward,

Here's wishing you speedy recovery in time to take photos for the X1 challenge!

My personal take on all these stuff like firmware is to not expect anything, as expectations often lead to disappointment!

I enjoy things as they are and if improvements come my way I am thankful but otherwise I still have fun with the camera anyway.

Not happy. Last night I took pictures at a low light party- infinitely frustrating asking people to pose for a 3rd or 4th time- candid shots were all but impossible. Focus ALWAYS missed. Hardly any usable shots. Manual focus ridiculousness was necessary and has anyone tried to do manual focus at 3200 ISO at a low light party? It sucks.

First time I was embarrassed of my Leica was when I ad to ask someone for a third try at a great shot. Ruining decisive moments here why so skimpy with the release?

Why are you all so impatient? Would you rather Leica released an update that was full of bugs and was not quite up to their exacting standards?

Patience, grasshoppers!

Competition sets the benchmark for customer expectations. Inlcuding the ones related to turn around time for firmware updates, whether they are released to fix bugs or upgrade/improve on installed FW. Unfortunately, Leica misses these benchmarks by country miles. I think is is absolutely ok, to hold a maker of a super premium priced product to benchmarks established by competitors. Some of which might have as limited development budgets as Leica has, such as e.g. Ricoh's camera unit or Olympus.

I give up complaining simply because all manufacturers have their own agendas beyond our control. Since ranting apparently does not help I choose to use it as it is and am happy. Else I switch to other makers. Note that after tens of thousands of rants leica is still sitting on the update.

Just enjoy shooting till something comes up, and if the gxr is fast you can always choose that as a cheaper and faster option, at the expense of some IQ.
