Ivan Muller Posted December 7, 2010 Share #101 Â Posted December 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The X1 is my first Leica and I like it a lot . I have had it for two weeks now and It feels great in the hand, even better I think than my Contax G1 or Hexar. So, I am prepared to overlook many of its 'drawbacks', slow-ish focussing being one of them... Â My concern with increasing the focussing accuracy via a firmware update is that probably one of the main reasons why it is so slow is the same reason that Olympus's (Pen) focussing is slow - it has to move heavy lens elements. And that they wont be able to fix. What this camera will teach one is to anticipate the action, which is not a bad thing at all. Anyway this is a nice forum with many very knowledgeable Leica fundis! Thanks!
Advertisement Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 Hi Ivan Muller, Take a look here X1 Firmware v2 Upgrade [Merged thread]. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pthurst Posted December 7, 2010 Share #102 Â Posted December 7, 2010 A focussing speed update would be very good news. Â I used my X1 for work last week and was photographing pop celebrities at a concert (the pics are here). The X1 only let me down once when its slow focus meant that I missed a moment to capture one of the shots however the IQ was so impressive that all the press photographers were wowed, especially given the X1's size. (I didn't get chance to tell them that the RAW files are even better!) Â My understanding is that contrast detection AF can be tweaked via firmware so I'm hoping that this will result in a slightly speedier response however, I'd really like to see some kind of hyperfocal mode which would automatically focus the camera based on the f stop. This would eradicate the focus speed issue altogether. It is something which can be done currently but is a bit of a faff to set up and only really works for the higher f stops. Â Either way, I'm looking forward to trying the new update when its available! Â Ps... Even a few of the celebs commented on how cool the X1 looked, it was a talking point for some while posing :-)
h00ligan Posted December 7, 2010 Share #103 Â Posted December 7, 2010 I hope it wasn't n-dubz making the comment..holy cow...biggest joke since milly vanilli(without the lip-syncing?), man they are ridiculous. Shots look good though. Thanks for sharing. Â To be clear my comments on them have nothing to do with the quality of your shots..I just think they're awful, and a slap in the face of music having worked for the largest music magazine in the USA for a few years! The shots definitely seem to be up there with dslr shots, at least at default size..and I'm sure for most magazine print work. Looking forward to having a. Properly functioning x1 back, the dslr is already getting tedious.
ericbrinkhorst Posted December 18, 2010 Share #104  Posted December 18, 2010 Sounds great. Do we recieve a mailing from Leica when it is available?? I can hardly wait to install FW2 in my X1 There is some need for speed in this AF. The bigger MF screen would also be very welcome. The turn-off -> lens inside movement would be appreciated to be quicker also. One thing. If the camera is on C , the flash won't work.. Maybe is there a possibility to flash one time in this setting?? The slowest speed in the auto-iso setting could be better if it was 1/125 or 1/60?? ( Better result when i give the camera to my girlfriend.. ) Is sharpening - off also an option in FW2? I prefer to do these things afterwards. The protect function might be more quick to handle. I like the key-function in my nikon d3 / tag the favorites then delete the untagged ones. Of course the speed of the playback function has to increase.. Nevertheless th x1 stole my heart already. Here are some pictures of my daughters thirth violin lessons. Yfrog Album  Eric Brinkhorst / Holland
carlosecpf Posted December 18, 2010 Share #105 Â Posted December 18, 2010 I hope Leica gives us the new firmware version before the holidays! I was planning to take my X1 to Cuba on my New Year's vacation, but it is not an option with the current AF/MF issues... I am taking my trusty and faster R-D1s instead. Â I am negatively surprised on how slow leica is to release this new firmware... Come on, it has been more than one year since the camera was launched and we got nothing. jsrockit Posted December 22, 2010 Share #106 Â Posted December 22, 2010 If I didn't know any better, I would think the firmware update is a myth. Leica is notoriously slow for FW updates though no?
JeTexas Posted December 22, 2010 Share #107 Â Posted December 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's no myth, they're just slow. They announced the black X1 would be available in October. It's just now available in December. They announced the digiscoping adapter would be available soon -- it's still nowhere to be found. Â They did just update the S2 firmware on Dec. 17. Maybe the X1 firmware is next.
carlosecpf Posted December 22, 2010 Share #108 Â Posted December 22, 2010 Â They did just update the S2 firmware on Dec. 17. Maybe the X1 firmware is next. Â Maybe... Unfortunately I already left for vacations with my R-D1s, but I do hope other X1 users get the firmware update before the holidays. To make things worse, I realized today that the rangefinder on my R-D1 is a little off... :-/
spylaw4 Posted December 23, 2010 Share #109 Â Posted December 23, 2010 The update won't be before the holidays. My guess would be late January at the earliest. Nevertheless I live in hope!

tok Posted December 23, 2010 Share #112 Â Posted December 23, 2010 Shit!!!! when will the firmware 2.0 out??? can't wait anymore
h00ligan Posted December 24, 2010 Share #113 Â Posted December 24, 2010 I didn't get my repair returned with 2.0, unsurprisingly. :/. At least it's fixed though! The thumbs up and leica vf both seem nice. The former seems much more useful but the framelines in the vf are good and it's very bright. Not sure if I'll keep the vf. Â I hope leica put the firmware out shortly.
Ecaton Posted December 24, 2010 Share #114 Â Posted December 24, 2010 Nikon had some issues with its new camera "D7000" or something like that. Within about two weeks they released a FW update. It's called customer service, Leica, if you only listened! Customer loyalty matters as soon as viable competition is around. Who knows, we might see a digital RF from others soon. As far as the X1 is concerned, alternatives exist and I start to loose my patience with the X1. This FW update is overdue

Maybe the X1 firmware is next.  I would not call it slow, but rather incompetence, in managing market and customer expectations. Never over promise in business, it is going to haunt you, eventually, something most know, but Leica.
phancj Posted December 24, 2010 Share #116 Â Posted December 24, 2010 I dunno, I havent found one with the same IQ vs size camera yet to replace it. So I can honestly say I am happy with it so far, with a caveat that I am ok with it not being perfect, coz nothing is.

A different focal length, granted, but some might even prefer the wider angle of view. Once Sony releases Zeiss lenses for the NEX, it starts to look interesting. I agree, presently, there is no obvious alternative, if 36mm equiv, IQ, size, weight are the key criteria.
phancj Posted December 24, 2010 Share #119 Â Posted December 24, 2010 I prefer the IQ of the X1 vs the GXR, and the 35mm too (24mm is way too wide for "environmental" portraits which I shoot a lot... you have to literally paste the cam onto the subjects faces haha) On the basis of IQ alone the X1 is still better. If I am not mistaken the GXR is larger too.
Douglasco Posted December 24, 2010 Share #120 Â Posted December 24, 2010 I think the reason we have no firmware update yet is because Leica have to get it right. I believe the reputation of this camera rests on this update, they have to speed up the focusing and improve the shutter lag for a start. I am disappointed we have no firmware update. all of the cameras that have been released at the same time or after the x1 seem to have had firmware improvements. So why not the X1
