I'm relatively new and shoot a digilux 2 along with a panasonic g2 ( the leica 45 2.8 is very sharp)--Can one use a 67mm filter with the proper step ring on the D2--I haven't tried it yet, but I assume one has to stay away for f2.0 it will work ok

Probably, except maybe for the very widest settings (28 mm or so). I have a 58 mm achromatic closeup lens (quite thick) that I use with a special step ring that Lensmate sold at the time, and even this extreme case works well from about 50 mm upwards.

Have no experience with a step down ring. I use a 69 - 72 step up ring and of course that works fine....

I just now tried my 69>67mm step down ring on the D2.

There is slight vignetting upto 37mm

After 37mm vignetting disappears.

 

 

(Really is worth obtaining the best filter to preserve the lens sharpness of the D2).

You can use 67 mm filter without vignetting using ultra slim UV filter and slim 69-67 down ring:D. Just make sure total additional thickness is less than 7mm.
