Advertisement Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Hi adli, Take a look here "Leitz" red dot for M6. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted March 23, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2011 Seems this has been happening for some time. Perhaps you can take the suggestion of one commenter here and call Solms to see if they have one from their used bin. Jeff

mikebidwell Posted March 24, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 24, 2011 Is it possible to get a "Leitz" red dot for the M6 anywhere? Leica have replaced mine with a "Leica" red dot when my M6 was in Solms for CLA. Having just read your post I had to make a quick dash to check my M6 which went back to Solms last year for repair, mine still has its Leitz red dot . I would have been really hacked off if it hadn't but in saying that prior to you saying about yours I hadn't even given a thought. I hope they sort it out for you, I'm curious though as to why they would even want to change it ??
earleygallery Posted March 24, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 24, 2011 They have to take it off to get at the rangefinder adjustment screw, maybe yours didn't need adjusting. It's only a plastic disk, so they probably don't take much care removing it and simply stick a new one in its place. I'd consider it a free upgrade! Jeff S Posted March 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 24, 2011 I hope they sort it out for you, I'm curious though as to why they would even want to change it ?? See the link I provided above; logical explanation seems to be that, if Leica have to remove the dot (to access the rangefinder), then they replace it with a new dot, which has said Leica since the late 1980's. One would think that Leica would also stock old Leitz dots for this purpose, but evidently not. Jeff PS I asked Leica NJ, if I ever had to send in my chrome M8.2 for service, would they keep the black dot that I put on to replace the original red one. They said if I asked in advance, they perhaps could accommodate. Otherwise (as reported by many here), they'll automatically put on a red dot before returning, sometimes even if the service didn't require RF adjustment. efix Posted March 24, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ooh, I think a "Leitz" red dot would look fancy also on an M8 or M9
tobey bilek Posted March 24, 2011 Share #8 Posted March 24, 2011 They had to change it for a legal reason which I forget. Had to do with the sale of Leitz and dividing it between microscopes, optic GPS, and cameras. Leitz was a trademarked logo that did not go with the sale. Perhaps with this nudge, someone will remember more exactly.
Xmas Posted March 24, 2011 Share #9 Posted March 24, 2011 Hi Toby You are 100% The old company name was Leitz, the new company name is Leica, Leica does not own the old company name, so the new kit is not made by Leitz, it would be false pretences to claim it. noel
adli Posted March 24, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted March 24, 2011 Here is the answer I got from Leica Customer service: "The Leitz red dot needed to be removed. Unfortunately we are not allowed as Leica Camera AG to use an “old” Logo. This is the reason why you got a Leica red dot." Still, they should be able to return the old one they removed from my camera....
Jeff S Posted March 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted March 24, 2011 Good, so you can stick on your old one. Many threads here through search if you have any questions on process. Jeff
adli Posted March 25, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted March 25, 2011 The comment about they should be able to return my old one was mine, not Leicas...
earleygallery Posted March 25, 2011 Share #13 Posted March 25, 2011 The old one was probably binned, and also probably damaged if not removed very carefully with the intention of refitting it. Buy an old M6 with a Leitz dot and swap them over.
adli Posted March 25, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted March 25, 2011 Buy an old M6 with a Leitz dot and swap them over. This is going to be an expensive CLA....
