c.sandberg Posted March 19, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have the opportunity to buy a used Leica m8.2 for 20 000 SEK (about 2200 Euro, 3000 USD or 1850 GBP). I've checked and the camera don't have any sensor issues, the LCD is clean without any dust behind it, the body is in overall good condition except some rather noticeable marks above the rangefinder (paint marks). The camera don't have any warranty (just ended). Is it a fair price for the camera? (I don't want to pay overprice) Many thanks for your replies. jamesk8752 Posted March 19, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 19, 2011 I've seen nice M8.2s for sale at $3000-3200 in other camera forums, with fewer than 5000 actuations and minor cosmetic blemishes. Regards, Jim

I'm starting to get second thoughts... If you are buying from a dealer, will he give you a store warranty? If not, would the seller allow you have the camera inspected by a qualified camera service technician? 17000 exposures is a lot, to be sure, but the camera should be good for more than 50000. If everything looks good otherwise, I wouldn't worry about that. Regards, Jim

Thank you for your advice.
Jeff S Posted March 20, 2011 Share #9 Posted March 20, 2011 $3k is on the low end in the US. On the high end, some dealers such as Tamarkin are closer to $4k for a mint one. I bought a mint chrome one from Dale Photo late last year for $3400. It had just under 7000 actuations and had just come back from Leica NJ for a full service (inspect, CLA, etc.) authorized by Dale, with full paperwork indicating proper working order in all respects. There were no visible marks on the body. The Dale rep said it was one of the nicest ones he has seen. If nothing is functionally wrong with your camera, and it has been well maintained, then the price is very good. FWIW, some dealers still have some Leica demo cameras, basically new with full warranty, for $5k, but typically negotiable for perhaps up to $500 off. lct Posted March 20, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 20, 2011 Mint or near mint M8.2s with less than 10,000 actuations can be found for around EUR 2,500/2,800 with one year dealer's warranty on e**y. Such offers come for German dealers mostly.
bpalme Posted March 20, 2011 Share #11 Posted March 20, 2011 I've been watching prices a lot lately and 3K is cheap for an 8.2 with low actuations so one with 17k would probably go for a little less than 3K. One sold for $2800 on 3-4-11 (ebay)with 7k actuations. I would ask a little less since that is way more actuations than the norm I see at the 3K mark. colonel Posted March 25, 2011 Share #14 Posted March 25, 2011 Don't rule out the M8. I know the M8.2 has a quieter shutter and a few other nice things, but unless you definitely need one of these things I would also look at the M8. I recently bought a M8.2 as I assumed (as is written here may times) that the M8.2 is more recently made and therefore has the probability of less bugs. I don't think this is true now, based on what I have read and my experience, certainly the very first batch of M8s had more teething problems then later batches, but also the firmware had a number of issues and this has been updated multiple times. The M8.2 I bought had 3.5k actuations (i.e. virtually new) and was in mint condition. When using it I found two nasty hot pixel clusters at ISO 2500 down to ISO 640 with one causing a visible red line 1/2 way down the sensor. I returned it. I then started looking at M8s as well and found a M8 in mint condition with 1K actuations (not such an issue as these cameras can be used inn excess of 100k actuations and even much more potentially, but just to note). I also had a 12 month guarantee from the dealer. Its been perfect so far. The other good thing is that anytime I could send to Solms for a LCD screen or shutter upgrade and receive a free 1 year warranty for the whole camera. best rgds
lct Posted March 25, 2011 Share #15 Posted March 25, 2011 ...these cameras can be used inn excess of 100k actuations and even much more potentially... Any link confirming this?
colonel Posted March 25, 2011 Share #16 Posted March 25, 2011 Any link confirming this? A bit of speculation based on what I have read. Note that Copal make the shutters for Leica. they also make for Nikon and typically quote 150k or 300k for Nikon shutters I have heard of Leica M8s that are in the 70k range and have always been fine. Also read about someone whose shutter broke at 10k actuations, so no guarantee, as with anything. The good thing about the M8 is that you buy initially at a cheaper price. But if you need to repair, post the dealer guarantee, you might as well do the upgrade and get a full Leica guarantee and the new type shutter. I would be wary about buying with no dealer guarantee (e.g. from ebay.) Sure, do it by all means, but expect to pay a lower price then a dealer, I would say lower by the cost of at least one visit to Solms ...
lct Posted March 25, 2011 Share #17 Posted March 25, 2011 I would not bet on such performances w/o documented testimonies but it's just me. About eBay you can find dealer's warranties there. One year usually in Germany.
