Jamie Roberts Posted January 29, 2007 Share #21 Posted January 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) @ Bill--I'm in the corner right now; you know I only shoot RAW! @ Neil--just sent you an email about how to set custom WB. You pretty much have to do that right now because the AUTO WB is currently a little off with the current M8 firmware (I also bet you're trying to get shots with the M8 that you wouldn't try to take with any other digicam, no?) Advertisement Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Hi Jamie Roberts, Take a look here First few shots with the M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
neila Posted January 29, 2007 Author Share #22 Posted January 29, 2007 Jamie - you are a complete STAR! Thank you. I feel as if some mystical secret has been explained - thanks so much for writing such a comprehensive note. I also feel that I should delete my comments about the M8 too! It sounds like it's more a case of my own ignorance!! There probably is a black/magenta issue, but learning how to set the WB properly is clearly the first step this particular idiot should now try! And yes you're right - I do attempt shots with the M8 that I wouldn't normally. It's such a joy to use and, like many here, available light is perfect for me - I like handling the Leica and I know it's capable of things I am not. A little like my 3 wood on the fairway!! Guest guy_mancuso Posted January 29, 2007 Share #23 Posted January 29, 2007 I think that's the 'wondrous, frustrating world of M8'! My other Leica's and indeed my RD-1 didn't need much fiddling to get it right. I'll get there in the end I guess!! Just a learning curve and patience. You'll get there
bnelson Posted January 29, 2007 Share #24 Posted January 29, 2007 It is my belief that not only is focus issues more accute with digital capture, but also we as photographers have instant access to the results and in a form we rarely encountered in the film days. When we open an image in photoshop and view at 100% it is similar to taking a 35mm negative and printing it at something approaching 13x20 inches (if printed at 200dpi). Today we can do that with each and every image taken, at no cost, and with very little time to do. I'm really having to learn with this M8 (manual focus, raw workflow, photoshop techniques, etc.) but the beauty of the M8 to me is that the images I get right look really good. I'm trying to get better with my end of it, and I wish a few of the problems had not occured, but I am back to loving this photography due to the M8. I just think part of the problems is that we now can do and see much more this any digital capture. Plus we usually take more photos. Bill
wparsonsgisnet Posted January 29, 2007 Share #25 Posted January 29, 2007 Neil, it's easy -- even I can do it. All you need is the help of Jamie, Guy, Sean, and a few others. 1. Yup, get filters. 2. Get a WhiBal card and carry it with you. You can take a pic of this any time you are shooting; just hold it in similar light. They're inexpensive (and priceless). When you're done sneaking shots, then photograph the card. 3. Shoot RAW. 4. Go home, click on the WhiBal card in the pic, and Magic: just the right color. Bob's your uncle. Have fun with the new camera. Cheers, Sean

I'll get there in the end I guess!! I don't think it is brand-related you should see the *ahem* les-than-perfect processed shots I managed on my Canon 10D a few years ago - or rather not. I deleted them in shame:(
Jamie Roberts Posted January 30, 2007 Share #30 Posted January 30, 2007 Well, I asked for the email offline, which was dumb. Jamie, how 'bout a thread with your information? tnx, Done--you can find it all in the manual, probably, but it's all in the White Balance M8 post! Bill, dumb question time again. Are you saying that you can set WB after the shots of your subject are taken? So the shots of the Christening I took (which are still in the M8) could be referenced to a card (had I shot one on the day)? Is this in RAW only? PS, Yes the help of Jamie and others here has been extremely useful - invaluable actually. I realise that helping out those who are unfamiliar even with the basics is tiresome, so it's extremely kind too. WB is a subject I've never even thought about - I do now!
