The owner remarked about 'customers' seeking his advice - and then buying the camera demonstrated on the internet.

Nothing changes, 40 years ago I was in retail (not cameras) and would give free advice to people that would buy for £5 less from a catalogue, then if something went wrong they would bring it to me expecting me to fix it

As I say nothing changes, it just gets worse.

Sad news indeed.

I have NEVER BOUGHT ANYTHING ON LINE, I like to buy from shops that know what they are talking

about, first check, then exam, then discuss the price, then I buy, with me price is not an issue but service is.

Unfortuntely the Melbourne Camera exchange has now moved to the suburbs out to Box Hill as the owner claims to lower overheads and can offer prices to compete to on line sales.

However Camera Lane is still in the City if you still want to buy Leica Gear.

I went into Kingsley last week to see Tim and pick up the last shop batch of Delta 100 he was holding for me. I brought all my leica gear there and also sold a lot of kit through them on commission.

On any issue I had with my M7 and M8 (plus some lenses) he sorted them out immediately - brilliant service - when my M7 had to go to Solms for a shutter replacement he lent me a shop M6 (and had to fight me to give it back!).

Obviously I shop online for some items - but I live just up the road from Kingsley so it was a good local source of kit and knowledge. Lately they were not holding Leica stock and mainly a Nikon dealer. What killed them off was the horrendous rental and rates in the area and as Tim said on the interview the internet prices - also I was amazed when he told me how low his margins were on Nikon kit.

Great shame the shop has gone - and its staff.

In the 1970s my employer would hire cameras from them for architectural photography. I later had two s/h Canon SLR (film) cameras from them, new Nikon scanner and then road-tested the M8 for a morning, and immediately bought one from them. Helpful staff; a shame to see them go.

I bought a nice Leitz table tripod from them. I had just prevously bought a non-Leica German 135mm 39mm thread lens (I forget the make) from them. The RF coupling did not work properly with my IIF, possibly as it was not a lens designed for Leica cameras but there was absolutely no quibbles about taking it back and that's when I spotted the tripod. Nice people to deal with and sad to see yet another small specialist dealer going.

In my recent experience the price I pay for a Leica product from a local retailer is the same as what I would pay for the same product over the Internet. That was true when I bought my X1. Same price at Green Mountain Camera as it was at B&H. So from that standpoint it makes no sense to buy over the 'net. Trouble is back here at home there are no local Leica retailers... <sigh>
