Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but if not, I'm sure the moderators will move it. :D:

I just bought a used copy of this interesting camera in perfect cosmetic condition, but it seems that the shutter cocking and release are not working properly. (Yes, I read Dunk's comments in an old thread on this camera in the Film forum, and I think I'm doing everything the right way.) I spoke to Dave Elwell at Leica in NJ today to ask about having it repaired, but they have no local capability to do this in the US and he will have to contact Solms about it.

My question is whether anybody in this forum knows if Leica still offers service for this camera, and if so, has any idea of what an overhaul of the shutter system might cost. I have seven days to return the camera and I'm not confident of hearing back from Leica before time runs out...

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Regards, Jim

Not that I am a KR fan, but;

Unlike Japanese cameras, LEICAs only go for a decade or two before they need to be cleaned and relubricated. Even LEICAs from the 1980s need service today to run well; any 1950s or 1960s LEICA will certainly need a tune-up if it hasn't already had one.

I have Gus Lazzari do all my work. He more than knows what he's doing with fine equipment.

Also, Sherry Krauter in NJ has done a lot of work for me with excellent results. I feel many will recommend others.

Did you buy from a dealer or private? If a dealer, have you asked if they will repair it?

Assuming you didn't buy from a Leica dealer, speak to your local one. They will almost certainly have a camera repairer who they sub work out to, I would imagine that it's something pretty simple to sort out.

I understand your reluctance to part with it, I bought a new/old camera last week and have found a problem with it. I'm in the same boat, take it back or keep and repair (it's not g'teed as such but they sold it on the basis I could test it).

I was recently at Camera West & saw they have one for sale (actually 3 demos, on their website). You might find it easier to take it back & buy a different one.

Kirk

What is more interesting - they are selling a STEMAR in excellent condition.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts and suggestions. I'd really like to keep this camera, as it was priced significantly cheaper than any other I've seen (and now I know why, says the cynic in me). Anyway, I still have 5 days left to decide...

I received a surprisingly quick reply from Dave Elwell of Leica NJ, advising that a trip to Solms by my 0 Series Replica will likely cost me $500-600 for labor, plus any parts that are required. Ouch! Solms indicated that based on the symptoms I described, a total disassembly and complete overhaul will probably be needed.

I'm now looking at other options. I don't trust any local repair shop to do this work. DAG is one possibility; I trust his work and he might charge a little less.

Have you tried cocking and releasing 10 times at each shutter setting? Sometimes this solves a sticky shutter.

Tried the exercise cure, no joy. It feels as though there is something broken in the shutter cocking mechanism. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Regards, Jim
